I have had a lumpectomy 2 weeks ago and results today show stage 1 with no lymph node involvement but triple negative. Got it all in surgery. I'm sure the oncologist is going to want to do some chemo but my other issue is I currently have about a 25% function of one kidney and 0 on the other. I can't see injecting chemo into my body that is struggling to improve the kidney function. If I say no and buy 5 years I will know that I gave my kidney a chance to recoup. IF it recurs I will hopefully be in a better physical and social state to fight round 2 if need be. I'm 66 and have now had 6 surgeries in 12 months. My body needs to heal not further trauma.
Anyone else have kidney issues they dealt with during chemo?
hi
welcome to the online community , sorry you had to come and find us
stage 1 with no lymph node involvement is good but usually triple negative will require chemo as you suspect but then so does Her2+ and I heard someone recently say that they hadn't been recommended chemo as it was caught at such an early stage.
I don't know if anyone on here had kidney issues whilst on chemo but your oncologist will guide you on what is a practical treatment for now and discuss options for the future.
we also have the helpline 0808 808 0000 open 9 until 8 weekdays
let me have a quick search around for 'kidneys' on the site as it won't be limited to breast cancer.
personally I didn't want chemo but my oncologist said I'd be mad to refuse as it offered quite a substantial benefit
what you also have to consider is that a recurrence might not just be confined to the breast and this belt and braces chemo is mostly to prevent metastases or spread to other sites or organs.
when is your next appointment ? and what are you doing to actively improve kidney function ?

A lady I know had a 6mm tumor which was triple negative and she didn't have chemo, she is the sort of person who would have everything offered so I know she wasn't offered it. She just had radiotherapy. She is about 70.
I had appt with the oncologist yesterday and thankfully I won't be doing chemo. Know the options and chance of it coming back but tumor was small and they felt no chemo and just continued observation. Will do radiation after new year.
My kidney option is just drinking lots and lots of water. I sometimes have floating eyeballs and don't pass many bathrooms but my creatinine count has gone from 3.9 down to 2.3 so it is working. May never get normal but for now it is ok.
