Hi, I just wondered if there are ladies out there who have problems following the LD back muscle operation?  My surgery journey has been a complicated one, everything that they warn you could go wrong, did.  I now have a lot of stabbing pain in my back where the muscle was, the worst thing is the feeling of tightness around my body which is 24/7, its like wearing an extremely uncomfortable bra, even when you are naked.  I asked about this in the hospital when i came round as it was really and and i felt breathless, and they said it should ease. The muscle at the front isnt in the right place, its more under my arm and it feels so alien, twitching and flexing when it shouldnt. The implant had to come out as a) it was infected and b) the LD muscle wasnt big enough and was so tight it sort of squeezed the implant out. I had a hole in my breast for weeks before it was taken away.  My previously unscarred body is now a mess and no surgeon in the country, I have visited lots of top people, can put it right.  In part i just have ribs and skin, no flesh covering, and an unsightly bulge.  I am trying really hard to move on, some days are ok, but the disbelief that nothing can be done is the worst. I recently went to a support group however everyone there seemed thrilled with their results and had had successful surgeries, so I came away feeling like the quassimodo of the group. In some ways its good that no one seems to have had my experience, i wouldnt wish it on anyone, but oh how it would help to speak with anyone facing the same challenge.

To all you ladies facing surgery, you have to trust your surgeon and go with the outcomes, i am but a miniscule statistic.  There are more great uplifting success out there an you will be one of them.

  • Hi J4N

My experience has not been as bad as yours but I can sympathise. I had LD reconstruction with implant in 2010 and all was well until around 15 months ago. I now feel I am wearing a steel bra and I am in pain 24/7. I thought perhaps my implant had ruptured but a recent MRI scan the BC Consultant has said my MRI results showed nothing that should concern us whatever that means. I am on painkillers which can't be doing me much good. Not sure what to do next but to be honest it has ruined my life as it is so so painful.

Someone on the BCC site had the same and was going to have physiotherapy to try and ease the pain.

Am due to see the doc on 9th August so I will see what she thinks.

I hope she may refer me back to the plastic surgeon who did my reconstruction. We shall see.

Just wanted you to know you are not alone.

Hi Sue, sorry to hear that you have problems too, I was beginning to think it's only me and I should stop complaining but the pain is constant. It feels exactly as you describe, like a steel band around you which sometimes you can zone out and ignore it but at other times it drives me crazy. I have found. That ta worse after activity, if I have a heavy days gardening I suffer more for a few days after. I talked it thro with my consultant Bamburgh they just said it should ease. It hasn't. Now 18 months. I am now under a different consultant to try to find some surgical solution to areas and I've said to him how bad it is. His comment was that different surgeons have different methods of doing the LD and maybe it had been stretched too much. But it can't be undone. Even if he took the muscle off the front, the tight band feeling goes right around the back where the muscle was. I do know how you feel. I have tried back massage but no joy. I went to the Physio at Yorkhospital and she worked on it for a long while. It gave me a few days respite, but then came back. I am sitting here now in total discomfort. It's a bizarre feeling and I would give anything to be released from the pressure, some days it's unbearable.  Thank you for responding, you are the first person to describe it exactly.

  • Hi again Jan

The only relief I have is when I first get up it is fine but gets steadily worse during the day.

I have just had 2 strong painkillers as the pain is really bad at this time of night.

My friends and family want to know what is causing the pain. I wish I knew the answer. My doctor at one time suggested I should increase my dose of anti depressants. I am sure she thought I was exaggerating. If only that was true.

I feel my breast are trying to escape from my body it's so tight.

Hopefully someone will come up with the answer. I live in hope.

I have 4 grandchildren aged 5 and under and want to play with them without being in pain.

At least we can have a moan together.

im having LD flap surgery on 9th August and am getting a bit worried after reading about you poor ladies.i am self employed (childminder) and need to be fit to work after a reasonable recovery period .i am having the surgery done in two stages with a 4-6 month gap.did you have it done this way?

Hi Anne, by 'in two stages' I guess you mean the mastectomy and then the LD reconstruction later?  I had it all done all together, I discussed it with them, and they said as I was fairly active and in good health to just have it in one op. It's entirely person tho in what you think you can face. I would say the the ladies who just had straight mastectomies were up and about quickly  and seemed to recover amazingly well. I think it's the reconstruction surgery which takes much longer. Hope this helps.

Sorry I didn't explain myself very well.i had a mastectomy last June .my consultant said he the LD flap is done in 2 stages although that's not how it was explained to me by the BCN who went through the various types of surgery with me.

I've never heard that it was done in two stages, plenty of people have had it done all in one though, unless you are having an uplift on the other side at some point?

Are you sure your surgeon knows what he's doing?!

  • Hi Anne

I had a delayed reconstruction because I had radiotherapy after my chemo and the plastic surgeon wouldn't do the recon until I was fully healed.

My recon was in 2010 and until recently it was fine. I do think picking up my grandchildren has not helped me. But what can you do.

Perhaps you should mention that you are a childminder.

I also had axillary clearance so that has weakened my arms.

Hopefully your surgery will go well. Just try not to lift with that arm.

Surgery techniques have changed somewhat no doubt. Sorry if we have worried you. We might just have been unlucky.

  • Just another thought Anne. Is the second op to create a nipple perhaps?  I had that done a few months after reconstruction.

No it's nothing to do with a nipple that hasn't even been mentioned yet and I'm not sure I'll bother with it anyway.the way I understand it,the back muscle will be put in place and also a tissue expander.the second part is to put in an implant .they said that as back muscle is quite rigid an implant helps with a better shape.don't know what else they might do.i will also be having the other boob lifted at the second op.hope that makes sense Sue
