Hi, I'm wondering what to expect with hair loss and feel I might be reaching the stage where I need to bite the bullet and shave it off or if I should carry on hanging in there. I have incredibly thick hair, and lots of it which is why I wear it short anyway. I'm on week 5 of weekly Taxol in low dose and Herceptin, so 2nd week of cycle 2 and my hair is coming out in handfuls and has been for a week. It did start shedding in week 2 but nowhere near this, I've probably lost a good third but evenly distributed. But if you didn't know me you wouldn't notice as I still have a good head of hair (although it now moves in the wind which I've never experienced in my life, quite a nice feeling!) My dilemma is I can't leave it alone and want the loose out and I only need to look at it and it seems to fall out, it's constantly falling on my neck and clothes so irritating. And at times my scalp is quite sore. I know there's no right answer as we all react differently but I would really appreciate hearing about other people's experience on weekly Taxol. I've not needed any other chemo so really don't know what to expect. I'm wondering if I should let it go so Im not wondering about it all the time or if I should just get a grip and see...

  • hi

I had EC and my hair started to fall out pretty much on 14 days, so I got my husband to give me a #2 all over.  It took ages and there was still so much hair. But my wig fitted better and I just got used to it.

My daughter was my 'depth gauge' she said it did look a bit thin, so that was that. off if went.

I also was mortified at the thought of it falling out in public, bizarre I know, but the mind is a wonderfully crazy thing.

Are you going wigs or hats, or scarves ??????

Hi, I'm on weekly taxol too, 2nd one yesterday, but not with Herceptin.  Touch wood I've no hair loss yet and my chemo nurse said that with the weekly it will probably only thin, could the Herceptin be making it fall out ?  I'm not that clued up on it all but I do have 2 wigs ready as after my 12 sessions I then start 4 sessions of FEC and my hair will fall out

  • I had AC then weekly paclitaxel but with a two month break in between. In that break, my hair started growing back, including eyelashes and eyebrows. It ALL fell out again 3 weeks after starting T. Back now :)

Hi I have a question. After losing your hair for the second time, while continuing taxol, did your hair grow back again?

  • Hi My hair didn't start growing back until after I'd finished Taxol. About 3 weeks after I'd finished I started noticing some peach fuzz and it took a few months to become a full lustrous head of hair. It starts growing from the back, with the top the last to come in - just like babies. I used to have really curly/frizzy hair but post chemo it's much straighter, with a gentle wave. The opposite of most people's experience and quite nice really.

Keep plugging on, it'll all be over soon enough and one day will be a distant memory.

    Cheers

Thank you for reply. I'm really worried as I had 2 treatments of AC and did my surgery. During that break of 2 months, I have a little hair growing. Now I have to continue my treatment with taxol weekly. Will I lose my hair again? If so will it grow back?

    Thank you,

    M

  • Hi again Your situation is similar to mine, except I had the 2 month break cos I was really ill in hospital. I can't say for sure that you'll lose your hair again but I did. Also, it's really unusual for hair not to grow back. For me everything's grown back, especially those nasty chin hairs which were first to show. The only issue I have is that my eyebrows are slightly patchy. Nothing that I can't fix with an eyebrow pencil though, when I can be bothered.

    Love

    Hi Lynn,

thank you for your reply.  How many weeks of taxol did you take?

  • I was supposed to have 12 weeks but ended up only having 9 as I had peripheral neuropathy. My oncologist said that it's common to get PN in hands and feet and it usually fixes itself within 6 months. However, if it starts moving up your arms it's more likely to be permanent. Mine was just starting to move up my arms, which is why we agreed that I should stop. My PN has pretty much gone away in my hands, except for slight tingling in my little fingers - nothing to be concerned about and doesn't stop me doing anything with my hands. I still have some in my feet, which affects my balance a bit so I have to be careful and wear sensible shoes lol.

Hi my name is Erinn and I’m getting ready to start chemo next Friday’ May 14th and I’m very scared and nervous but I’m not as nervous and scared about getting sick what I’m mostly worried about is loosing my hair that I don’t want to loose my hairs passed the middle of my back and it’s thick and I just don’t want to go from that to wearing a wig
