Newly diagnosed (bowel cancer) 44 year old Mum of 11 yr old and 9 yr old. Trying to understand this new ‘cancer me’ and what it means. 7 weeks ago went to drs with constipation and tiredness. Blood tests came back normal / low iron and FIT test I never got results. Advised piles . Phoned 3 weeks later with stomach cramps that would not go away and referred for more bloods. In the meanwhile, thanks to a private health work policy, I went private. Within a week I had a CT, then Colonoscopy where they identified a tumour blockage. Emergency surgery to remove the tumour and most of the bowel and now I’m 5 days post surgery trying to take it all in. Longer term I have enlarged lymph nodes , which were removed and a clear chest scan. But understand I will need chemo. It was a T4 tumour that had breached the wall to my kidneys (I think the fat rather than actual kidneys). The days are stormy so any advice or words from those who have walked a similar path are appreciated.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. Thank goodness you took things into your own hands as it sounds like you caught things in the nick of time. I can imagine you’re feeling pretty shell shocked and now reality is hitting you. Having said that try to focus on the fact that the tumour has been removed and you now need to concentrate on your recovery and getting in the best place possible for any future treatment.

If the lymph nodes that were removed test positive for cancer cells then they will probably recommend a course of chemotherapy and we’ll be able to offer you some top tips and advice once you know what you’ll be having.

    Take care
