Hi, I'm new to this group so hello.
I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in May 2022. I had chemo and cytoreductive surgery to remove all "visible" signs of cancer but unfortunately it returned in Jan 24 and I've been told that it's now incurable. I'm still having chemo, horrible tablets, and really struggling with the fact that this is now a lifelong condition. I'm 62 with a 21 year old son and this has rocked our lives. I didn't have any symptoms until I suddenly started getting really bad stomach pains and it was a terrible shock to be told I had bowel cancer. Does anyone have any advice or have a similar situation?
Hi, JulesF,
My situation is a little different to yours but I completely understand the world turned upside down emotion.
My husband (62 now) had been through the bowel treatment program and given an all ok.
This year a chest infection x-ray showed a shadow. The bowel cancer had metastasised to the lung. Not sure how we made it home after that consultation.
He was able to get sick leave and I got emergency leave to get out heads around it. We used this time to make future planning as best as we could. Talking with close family and all the boring legal and financial and funeral planning.
If you haven't already check for benefits that may help you with costs. Macmillan Advisors are great. Blue Badges from the Council help with parking.
It really helped to have something that could be controlled. We now focus on doing. He wanted to do the flight simulator at Duxford last weekend. So we did.
Do talk honestly to your nursing and oncology team. If a treatment is too harsh there are ways to ease the side effects and other treatments available. Others here will have good advice too.
Remember who you are and do the things you enjoy.
Right now husband is moving and redesigning his train set in the garage. Woolly hat, fingerless gloves, coat and cup a soups. And the biggest grin.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
