Hair loss on folfox

Hi all,

I’m in my second round of chemo folfox for rectal cancer. Today I am experiencing severe hair loss, I was told might get some thinning but seems more that.
Has anyone had similar and did it lead to complete hair loss as need to prepare myself if that happens. Been pretty upset today at the prospect.

  • Hello Tia

I lost a lot of hair while on fortnightly  Folfox last year from July to December.  The doctor described it as thinning.  I used to have very thick long hair and it started shedding from the roots top, sides and back.  Despite using baby shampoo and a soft brush my hair kept breaking which was very upsetting.   It  started to grow back curly and frizzy this year as I was on maintenance chemo of Cetuximab and 5fu.  Unfortunately one of my tumour markers has been rising since September and following MDT last Friday I am expecting to be told that I will need to go back on Folfox or switch to Folfiri which presumably means my hair loss will begin again. I was not offered cold cap and presume this is because I have to wear a chemo pump for 2 days after each infusion.

Hopefully you will not lose too much hair Fingers crossed.

  • Hi Tia I lost loads after round 2, like maybe half. I’ve had round 3 now (round 4 on Tuesday) and I’ve stopped shedding. Still had a pixie cut as I hated how it felt

  • Hi

I know you asked this months ago and probably have your answer now, but for anyone else reading this I just wanted to say that I've been shedding a fair amount of hair daily and am now on Folfox cycle 5 of 12. The way it's going I can't imagine having anything left by the end of treatment as it's already got so thin that my scalp is visible and I'm having to wear hats etc.

How did it go for you in the end - ie. did you lose all your hair? I hope not and that your treatment went well.

  • Hi, I lost over two thirds of my hair so there were visible bald patches. 8 months on I have good regrowth and weirdly it’s grown back curly especially at the back. Still quite short but I quite like it now. Early days I just wore caps when I went out was awful at the time but now it’s a distant memory. Hope all goes well for you I’m having surgery at the end of the month so focused on that now.

  • Thanks for letting me know

That's interesting to know as I can't decide whether I'm going to lose it all or not. I'm doing quite well with the chemo otherwise - far better than I'd imagined. I wish you all the very best with your surgery.
