Hi, I really hope someone can help talk me down from the sheer panic I am feeling. Had issues with stomach for years, mainly grumbling and sometimes swelling. A lot of rib pain on and off also. Have never seen blood in my stools. Lately I am having a real flare up of pain mainly under ribs and tonight sharp pains under the right rib. I have just had results back from a test I paid for that have told me to get checked by doctor urgently. The letter says I have a positive FIT test of 36 and Calprotectin of 218. To say I am terrified does not come close at all. I have spent so long now with this issues and sat with hot water bottle on my stomach most days. Last year I had a negative FIT test and CEA tumour marker. Had an MRI of pelvis with contrast and all clear. Recent blood tests also fine apart from slightly low folate. Worrying this is now spreading and my liver is impacted. I have doctors appointment at 9am and so far have not slept all night. My poor children who are going through such difficult times in their lives with school and exams and lots of hurdles. I’m so worried.
Hi Helentupsf46fe1 ,
Sorry I can't really help in terms of the pain as I had no symptoms prior to my diagnosis at all. However what I will say is that many things can affect the bowel and if there is something going on it is not necessarily anything sinister - but best to get yourself checked out. It could so many different things but our brains always go to the worst possible scenario.
In the unlikely event that it did turn out to be bowel cancer then it's notoriously slow growing. The most important step you can take is to go to talk to your doctor about your health concerns and keep pushing until they've identified what is causing your pain.
I hope the doctor is able to put your worries to rest today.
Best wishes

Hi, the doctor didn’t really check my stomach. She looked at my previous results and MRI and also my full bloods taken in June and said the bloods should have shown if something was off. I have terrible gnawing pain under ribs and upper abdomen gurgling with acid reflux. She said can I repeat the stool test and see how that is and if raised can refer for colonoscopy. Can’t stop crying today x
Hi Helentupsf46fe1 and a warm welcome to the board. The fact that you’ve had a clear FIT test last year and MRI is a good sign. The recent FIT test of 36 means that some blood has been detected in your stool sample but there are several things that can cause this such as ibs, crohns, colitis, diverticulitis etc. I think your doctor is correct in suggesting another FIT test and then look at a colonoscopy from there?
In the meantime try not to assume the worst as this will only exacerbate the gurglings and grumblings. You do not have a lot of the common symptoms associated with bowel cancer so try to stay calm until things can be investigated further
Take care
