Hi all,
I’m Nic. I am 45 years old (in a few days) diagnosed with rectum cancer on the 3rd of October. While the first observations were pretty reassuring, the PET scan showed metastases at the liver. I feel I have done all the MRI, blood test and scan that exits so I believe and I hope I have received all the bad news already. I still think sometime this is a bad dream and I will wake up, but it seems I am actually awake.
Tomorrow I will undergo my first surgery to get a stoma. This was mentally one of the most difficult thing to imagine. Finger crossed it should be temporary and in a year time I can use toilet paper again. After recovery I will start the chemo for 3 months and then radiotherapy and then we will see.
I have a wonderful 8 years daughter and even more wonderful wife. I like running, cycling, swimming. I am an Ironman, an ultra-runner and a beer lover too. I am French, but I have been away from motherland for the past 20years.
Not sure what else to say at this stage, just that I am here if anyone wants to talk.
Thanks all for your support,
Nic
Thanks Cerysm,
I just want the surgery to go well and no complications, would be the first good news for the past few weeks.
Also good to hear you are back into running. It’s good to know there could be a way back to routine after all this shit.
have a great afternoon
Hi Nic_f799bc and a warm welcome to the board. Sounds like you’re pretty fit which will stand you in good stead for the journey ahead. It will be tough at times but bowel cancer is very treatable so take a deep breath and focus on each stage at a time.
I hope the op goes well tomorrow. I’m sure you’ll quickly get used to the stoma but I found that beer went through quite rapidly so you may find that a few pints will resort in more frequently emptying. There’s lots of help and support on the stoma page too.

Hi Nic
Good luck for tomorrow.
You are obviously as fit person so that will help with your recovery. Keep positive.
Although it had been mentioned in passing and not discussed in any detail, I woke up after my resection surgery with a stoma (it was a surprise) it took a bit of getting used to but with patience it does get easier.
Nic stay positive, good luck
Peter
Sending love and support as you continue on this journey. I hope that all goes well with your surgery.
We are all at different stages but we recognise those feelings of shock and uncertainty you have described so well.
As you progress with your treatment, things will hopefully feel better. Take care of yourself.
Welcome Nic_f799bc
You sound an active person with good general fitness . Just want to wish you all the very best with your treatment . If you click on my user name you can read my mums treatment protocol with a spread to the liver . My mum passed last year and had more treatment towards the end of her life but not before she lived 15 years as a stage 4 patient and she did not have any further issues with her liver spread . She lived to 82 in the end .
She also still had loads of treatment options but lost her strength so I do hope this encourages you at the start of your plan . You sound focused and have a lot to push through for ! Best motivation ever is a beautiful child .
All the very best ,
Court
