Looking after my mum with new diagnosis of bowel cancer

Hello! I'm very new to this, my mum received her diagnosis two days ago, she's 85. We've been offered three options: chemo, surgery, or let things take their course. We're just waiting for more information about these options and what they involve, but if anyone has any suggestions for places they found particularly useful for research and gathering information I'd love to know about them as this is obviously all very new to us and this will be a steep learning curve for us.

My mum is also experiencing quite noisy symptoms which is impacting her willingness to go out in public. Do people have suggestions as to what might be done to make these symptoms easier to manage in terms of dietary adjustments, perhaps drugs that have been useful. I am going to start tracking her diet and see what changes I make to her diet improve the situation for her so that we can go out and do things to help take her mind off of things.

I'm very happy to have found this community!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
