Hi there , I’m new here . My mum has recently been diagnosed with colon cancer with metastasis to the liver . She is 87 and is too frail to withstand any treatment so is having palliative care . Just wondering if anyone is having a similar experience with an elderly loved one as me ?

  • Sorry no one seems to be around to help you. As far as I can tell the critical thing is that any pain is kept on top of.

I wonder if   can help at all

  • Hi

I can't help with the elderly part as i'm counted as young person in medical terms... but i can discuss colon cancer, metastatis liver spread and palliative care if that helps

  • Hi there , I hope you’re well . Thank you for replying . I suppose i just wanted to know what palliative treatment entails and in my mums case what may happen in regards to her decline . I want to be prepared as much as I can . She’s doing very well at the moment , thankfully . I’m particularly concerned about her being in pain at some stage and not being able to do anything about it .

  • Hi there, my Mum passed away nine years ago at 83. She had been visiting the local hospice to get to know everybody for about two years. She received excellent care when the time came to move to hospice care, and was never in pain.
My younger brother passed away last year shortly after his 70th birthday. He was on palliative care for 6 months, and was all set up for “home hospice”, but when the time came elected to check into the local hospice. He made the most of his last few months, still meeting up with his golf buddies every week for a pub lunch, and hosting two 70th birthday parties just two weeks before checking into the hospice. The palliative care was excellent throughout, and as in my Mums case, pain free.

  • Hi , thank you for your reply . It’s good to know that your mum and your brother were free of pain , that’s a great comfort to me . I was worried about that for my mum . I don’t know how long she has but we’ll make the most of it . Many thanks . Blush

  • The district nurses can put “ just in case meds “ into the house if she decided to stay at home . In our area we then had to phone the nurses to come out and start them for my mum. What I did not realise was you had to phone them again if you saw slight movement . There was a delay getting the second lot of meds into her . Only after three injections do they move onto a syringe driver which sorted everything out . I wish I had known  the protocol better . The district nurses were fantastic but felt I could have done with the palliative care team going through that with me .

I would find out the protocols for your mums area and know who to contact .
    take care ,
