Hi everyone, just been told my dad who is 76 and has vascular dementia, has a 5cm tumour in his sigmoid colon and 3cm bowel thickening in transverse colon. We have an appointment next week with the team but with him having dementia, we know he won’t cope with treatment. Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation, any advice would be great, thanks.
My mother-in-law was diagnosed with a large tumor nearly blocking her colon at 84. She had Alzheimer's disease and could not recall who anyone was and did not retain information for 5 minutes. She was simply unable to understand or tolerate the treatment. We chose to decline treatment and placed her in hospice. Recommendations in your Dad's case will depend on what's needed.
I'm really sorry this is happening to your family. It's a very tough situation
If you make the choice with love in your heart and trying to do what he would have chosen if he were able to choose, then the choice is the right one. You can't go wrong when you approach with that mindset.
Don't let anyone tell you what you should do. You know him better than your friends and the medical workers.
