Hi  ,

I am very lucky in most respects , as you i’ve still got my 86 year old Mum . What I’m finding hard is watching her in so much pain and not knowing how best to help . Mum was diagnosed with  stage 4 rectal cancer  3 months ago she now has a stoma bag since March and this week started 5 days of radiotherapy. She coped so well with the bag and op but the radiotherapy has knocked her for 6 . She can’t sit down anymore or walk around easily . She lives alone since my dad died of lung cancer 25 years ago and has been so independent. I live with my two daughters 21 and 18 and work full time.   The only pain relief she’s been offered is paracetamol but that doesn’t  really  touch anything. How long do the effects of radiotherapy last .   How can I best help my mum ? I work full time and can’t afford to have time off so  juggling work, and 2 kids going to uni in September .

  • Hi

I would give the radiotherapy unit a call to make sure everything is in order . You might want to speak to her GP to get the pain under better control .
    Radiotherapy burns please help

This thread might give you a bit of insight into how others handled the situation .

Send your mum our love . Does not matter her age no one wants their loved one to suffer and great that she has a caring daughter like you . A bit more input from her team should hopefully get her over this difficult patch .

You are only one person . You can only do what you can and you have done just that .

All the best to your daughters going to uni . A new chapter for you all .
    Take care ,
