Fit test positive and colonoscopy in four days

Hi

I feel a bit like I’m on a rollercoaster at the moment. I’m a 46 year old mum of two girls (one only four years old) and I’ve recently found blood in my stool - not a lot at all but enough to worry me. The fit test came back 232.

Aside from that I have no other symptoms. I have no pain, no anemia detected on the bloods etc.

i am so scared as I’m sure all you are and desperately trying to reassure myself that it’s just because I’ve taken up running and ran my first 10k or because the haemorrhoids I had in pregnancy have flared up inside me. I’ve never prayed for piles so much! I will say though that level of blood on the fit test score has worried me now I’m reading more on this forum. I don’t suppose anyone could reassure me?

thank you in advance x

  • Hey there.

I just joined in the last couple of days.  I literally know nothing about anything but I’ve bern a pro at blind panic. I’m praying for piles for you too!  I had them when I was pregnant and they are horrible

The people on this site have reached out to me when I’ve posted and they have literally pulled me out of a dark hole.   I’ve had a bad few days.

Today I finally realised I can’t change anything I’ll go for the tests listen to the doctors and not panic because i can’t control this

You’ll go for a colonoscopy I assume?  I was so worried about that but honestly it does not hurt at all. You’ll just find yourself being told to fart a lot (which my 11 year old found very funny).  I had sedation but that didn’t stop me watching the screen which I was happy to see.  The worse part is drinking the prep and knowing quickly that you can’t be more than 10 steps from the loo.

I look forward to reading about your piles soon xxx

  • Thank you so much for your lovely message! I look forward to updating you about my piles too. I am a bit nervous about that prep drink - I am a therapist and need to be in sessions for full hours at a time - how bad is it?!

  • For me it literally started working as soon as I finished the first dose.  I was done after 2 hours and because I had an afternoon appointment I didn’t need to take the next prep until the morning

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. The fit test result shows that there is blood in your stool sample but not the cause. Only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results  in a bowel cancer diagnosis and the blood could be caused by piles, colitis, diverticulitis, ibs etc. - the important thing is to get it checked out.m

The colonoscopy prep is needed to give them a nice clean bowel to look at. Personally I would clear your diary if you can? If you’re given the moviprep then you have to start taking it 12 hours before your appointment and once it starts to work then you will need to be near a toilet as eventually you will feel like you’re weeing out of your bottom (sorry if tmi!)

Please let us know how you get on?

    Take care

    Karen x

  • So my appointment is 2:10pm on Friday - I can’t see directions would I be taking it from the night before?

  • My appointment was at 2pm.  I had 3 sachets.  One I took at 6pm and the other two were mixed together and I had to take at 7am.  As Karen said it’s like you are peeing out of your bum.  They should give you clear instructions when they send the prep.  This also for me included a low fibre diet for 3 days before.  Contact your hospital if they haven’t sent you the instructions.  Honestly it’s fine painless and the sedation is lovely because for half an hour it makes you stop worrying.  Xxx

  • Hi  As Scoutabout says you should have some specific instructions? The link below is a hospital one but check with yours to be sure?

  • Hi. I feel for you. I'm an amateur runner lol. Done couple of steady 10ks. My sister gets piles too, really bad and she is a runner.  I've not been diagnosed with cancer but I have had what I thought was a large haemorrhoid.  Which has been uncomfortable.  Had one episode of passing red blood . No stomach ache or loss of appetite, blood in stool or low blood count or other red flags.  Been for sigmoidoscopy at docs and he put a band on 'haemorrhoid' but bowel not clear enough to look further.  He sent me to hospital to do another sigmoidoscopy (similar to colonoscopy i believe but just in lower bowel), but enema didn't work properly.  They did manage to see small portion of bowel but now want full colonoscopy as they saw very small polyps (looked benign) and said there may be more. When they swung camera round I could breifly see the haemorrhoid (which is now very very sore). Nurse didn't say anything at discharge and it just said 'haemorrhoid noted' on my paperwork.  She said the lady who did the scope would have said something.  However I am thinking they probably won't tell me until after the full colonoscopy. Hopefully mine is a  pile too and any more polyps are benign but you go down that road in your head don't you? Thinking of you

  • The reassurance comes from the colonoscopy. Just make sure you follow the preparation instructions as the cleaner your bowel is the more the consultant can literally see.
I think statistically only circa 2/10 have a cancer result. There are so many other problems that are related to your symptoms. Don’t google anything- it’s all out of date and inaccurate information.
Trust the medical team and nurses- they are there to support you.
I opted for a mild sedative which really helped. Best wishes and try to stay calm although through experience I know how difficult it is.

  • I think I've put the puzzle together,  I need to speak to someone involved. Do I speak to my doctor,  the hospital,  or who? To confirm what is happening with me.
