Hi, my husband was diagnosed with rectal cancer just before Christmas. We’ve had a long wait to start treatment, long story but he had to have a PET scan and we were told yesterday that the cancer has spread to his spine in several places and his lungs and possibly liver.
The plan for radiotherapy has now been changed to chemotherapy. I don’t think they are hopeful.
How do I cope with the panicky feelings I am experiencing? Getting lots of nausea and palpitations. What would my GP suggest as I don’t want to waste their time as I don’t want an anti depressant.
Hi Moomintroll
Please do contact your Gp . My GP was a great help and out me on a betablocker at the time to help slow everything down . Getting that help let me get more of a grip on the situation .
Going straight to chemo can be very helpful . It allows them to deal with the spread systemically . Target all areas at once . Gaining stability is the goal and then they rescan and review what other approaches might be helpful .
Do you know your husbands cell type ?
My mum has been wading through a stage 4 diagnosis for 14 years so there is always hope .There is a subgroup of patients that respond very well to chemo . It’s very individual. I hope your husband does well on it . You will see some people posting on bowel cancer U.K. who are on chemo for seven plus years .
Take care and ask anything you like ,

Thanks for your message that has made me feel so much better about his prognosis. His cell type is adenocarcinoma.
I wish him well on his chemotherapy. Everyone is different but I hope he mounts a good response.
Take care ,
