Hi everyone,
I have just joined this group after finding out about a month ago that my dad has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. It’s been quite overwhelming for all of us (myself (22), my mum and my younger brother (18)) and it has moved very quickly, as he had his operation to remove part of his bowel two weeks ago now and his recovery so far hasn’t been the best, as the operation was meant to be keyhole but ended up being a lot more invasive. We’re now waiting for news on what the next steps are and if he needs to have chemo, so hopefully we will know more in the New Year. As we’re coming up to Christmas, we know it won’t be one of our “normal” Christmases, but we’re trying to remain positive and upbeat for dad.
It’s so lovely to see everyone being so active in this group/forum, and it is so reassuring to me that my family aren’t the only ones going through this, and it’s lovely to read about so many positive outcomes and stories.
If anyone else is going through/has gone through the same thing at my age, I’d love to hear from you on how you found supporting your parents through this and any guidance others might have for remaining positive as somebody supporting a parent through their cancer journey.
Thank you, L x
Hi LozzB and a warm welcome to the board. I think staying positive and upbeat is a great way of dealing with it and I’m sure your dad will appreciate it too. 2 weeks is still very early in the recovery process but hopefully your dad will feel up to having a small Xmas dinner and a nice relaxing day with the family.
Generally the people posting on here are the patients themselves or their partners so not a lot of young ones (!) but I’ve noticed a couple of people of around your age posting recently on the friends and family page if you want to have a look/post there too?
You are of course very welcome on here too and we’re happy to help and support you and your dad through his recovery.
Take care
Karen x
