Feeling a bit stunned

Hi everyone

I've just joined the community after having a colonoscopy today and the nurse told me there's an area near my rectum that they took biopsies from and she said there's a strong possibility it's cancer. I just feel numb and my fiancé keeps breaking down in tears. I've got to have a couple of scans and the biopsy results will be two weeks apparently. I have absolutely no idea how to feel and I'm worried about my fiancé too. I'm dreading waking up in the morning and thinking everything is normal for about ten seconds until I remember what's happened today. I've no idea what I'm supposed to do about work, telling my mum, all these things going through my head. Anyone with similar experiences please help

  • The hospital just called me to get me in this afternoon for a CT scan, although it's good to be seen so quickly I'm also terrified that it's because things are very bad!  My brain is my worst enemy right now.

  • Well, there seems to be a lot of it about and on this site you are in good company. However, your biopsy hasn't been confirmed yet so take one bit at a time. I guess most of us thought "that's it, the game's up" but that really is not the case. I certainly thought that at the time but now I know different

  • Good luck with your CT

Its really good to get through the tests they need so they can decide next steps

    best wishes

  • Thank you! CT scan was this afternoon and then MRI on Wednesday morning. I'm glad and terrified all at once that the scans are happening so quickly.

  • As I said in some cases `they hit the ground running with this` seems its been that with you. It will be a `whirlwind` from now on hopefully and you'll get things done. Good Luck and Best Wishes

  • Good luck Squashable

I took the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman it kept me entertained. The radiographer did say,

    “ No Dancing ! “

    Sending you another hug

  • We are all here for you Squashable.

Had my colonoscopy in May and saw on the screen what I was up against (no symptoms until the Feb).  It has taken months for me to travel along the treatment path and I had to have another colonoscopy to have other polyps removed.    Yep, that treatment prep is even worse the second time around - it has been the worst bit for me so far. Darn it, I watched a whole tv series from my toilet...
I've now just finished chemoradiotherapy for 5 weeks and I'll start chemo soon, with a view to surgery in the new year.
Until I started treatment and knew what I was up against,  my head was all over the place, but I stayed positive, was blown away by support from friends and family.  You can do this Squashable.  You will have options.
Hardest thing for me was telling my sister (her husband having pancreatic cancer diagnosis) and telling my 93 year old dad.  Hard one to do, but once done the support was immense.

Thinking of you and sending love - everything crossed.

  • Thank you so much for your kind and positive words. I've just been informed I have an appointment on Thursday afternoon, so I imagine this is for the results. The uncertainty is getting harder to deal with so I just want to know what it is and what they're going to do about it!

  • Hi @Squashable. You honestly will feel a bit better once you have a treatment plan in place. Take a pen and paper with some questions and someone with you as a 2nd pair of ears. I’ve attached a link to a booklet that I was given at my first meeting which is quite helpful with jargon, staging etc.?
