Hi there,

I was diagnosed with colon cancer in December following several months of extreme anaemia. There were no other symptoms apart from blood in my stools so I was shocked. I am on day 9 post right hemicolectomy surgery now. Everything went well and I was allowed home on friday. Today I have suddenly got really bad diarhea and am struggling to cope!

Is there any advise from people to help me? I would love to hear it!

Thanks everyone.

  • Hi  ,

I too recently had surgery (although different to you) & only last week was in a similar dilemma to you.

Naively I thought I’d dodged a bullet & my bowel had recovered well from the trauma of surgery but alas, it took some time to wake properly & after a week of being home I had a flare up of some urgency.

I did a post about the sudden flare up & my snake within as I found this booklet really helpful, especially the muscle control exercises.

Obviously our situations may be very different but I’ve since been able to start reintroducing fibre back into my diet, one item at a time, which is helping firm things up a bit. I’m also keeping a food & bowel movement diary to see if there’s specific food that triggers any changes.

Hope this can be of some help to you!

    Hugs, Bee

  • Hi  Might be worth asking your doctor to test you for bile acid malabsorption- it’s a condition often found after a right hemicolectomy- see page 6 on the booklet that Mrs S has sent you x

  • Hi Mrs S,

Thanks for that. Just had a quick look and there was loads of advise. I have an appointment to talk to my dr later today so i have loads to ask about.

  • Do you have involvement from enhanced recovery team? or the colorectal nurses should also be able to support & advise you.

On a practical note I’d also got some wet toilet tissues & zinc & castor oil cream from the bowel preps that also helped in this situation.

Hope it goes well with the GP.
