Hello. I’m new to this group and not sure how it all works. I have just been diagnosed with rectal cancer. Very radicle surgery is planned for next week and I’m feeling terrified.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. Are you having an Abdominal Perineal Resection (APR)? You can search for previous posts by typing in keywords in the search box at the top of the screen or start a new post like you’ve done here with updates or questions.

I’ve attached a link to a booklet about operations and there’s a handy list about things to take into hospital with you - extra long charging cable is a top tip.

It is a scary time but you need to pit your trust in the experience and knowledge of your surgical team. The nursing staff will have you up and about as soon as possible after your op and your pain will be well managed.

We’re all at different stages of treatment and recovery on here but are happy to share experience and help and support you through this.

Please let us know how you get on and feel free to post with any questions?

    Take care

  • Not sure my surgery is involving the perineal. I’m seeing surgeon again tomorrow with my husband to discuss it in more detail. The surgery seems so huge for such a small tumour (1.5cm) but it’s within 6cm of the anal verge which apparently adds complications. Also 20% chance the lymph nodes are involved.

  • Just popping on to wish you all the best.If you know which operation you are having the relevant people on here will be along to answer any questions.

In the meantime if you click on peoples names you can read their stories
