Hi I'm Phil I'm 39 and just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, I am going to be having a total colectomy mid December and will require a stoma bag for life. I'm just looking for advise on coping and getting use to the idea of having it. I'm quite a healthy and active person who couldn't care less what people think so that battles already won.

  • Hello Phil,

I'm just saying welcome as I've just started on my rectal cancer journey too. I'm unsure if I'll get a stoma yet but I'm almost certain I'll get an temporary one at the very least.

Good luck with your battle....you have a great attitude!!

    Ralph.

  • Hi Burrito

Its daunting to start with however it’s no time at all before you’ll be sorting it out no bother

please join the stoma support group here. I gained confidence and advice being part of the group. They’re a great bunch and full of ideas.
It’s brilliant that you’re healthy and active try and keep that going adding core exercises will really help. I did the pelvic floor twice daily it helps get you out of bed quickly although you won’t be able to lift afterwards for quite some time
I travelled flew and ate out living life to the full.
Just get that cancer in the bin. That’s the most important thing

    Take care

  • Hi

I see you’ve already found the stoma group Ann mentioned-lots of advice and tips to be found there and any question you need to ask is fine.

I live with 2 permanent stomas-colostomy and urostomy- and they soon become second nature to deal with. Takes time at the beginning when you are healing, and it’s all new, but you adapt quickly to this new way of life. Soundslike you’ve already got a good start in being fit and active, and a good attitude going forward. As Ann says, cancer in the bin is the main thing!
