Hi All

I had a dissected right helicolectomy In August. 19 nodules were removed, 1 of which was cancerous.

Yesterday I had my first round of chemotherapy. I had an infusion over 2 hours of Oxaliplatin.

Today I started Capecitabine twice a day for 13 days, Then a week of no meds. So a 3 week cycle.

The infusion went okay but on removing the canula, my arm along the vein, felt like it was on fire so was very painful. The nurse said some people react like this, the vein can become inflamed.  It has eased a little today but still feels like needles in my arm.  I am wondering if any one else has experienced this and is it likely to happen every infusion?

Many thanks in advance for any of your experiences.

Best wishes to everyone.  Trish

  • Hi Sopranina

My arm was sore and sensitive for about 11 days so definitely trying the heat pad before and during my next infusion next Monday.  I hope you are coping well after your first infusion and no nasty side effects.

Best wishes to you.  Trish xxx

  • Hi PattyK,

Yes I heard the tingling in hands can extend to toes during the course of chemo.  I am hoping the tingling is only for a few days after the infusion and doesn't last until the next infusion.  I had tingling in my hands for about a week after my first infusion which then subsided thankfully.

I wish your husband well during his treatment and thank you so much for replying.

Best wishes to you both.  Trish xxx

  • Hi again Sopranina,

I agree it really does help to know other experiences during this challenging time.

I too had nausea for about 10 days after my infusion and like you wasn't actually sick thank goodness but it is a horrible feeling nonetheless.  I wonder if anyone has any good tips for helping with the feeling of nausea as I am pretty sure I will be experiencing this again after next infusion.

Re pain around the eye sockets, yes I had this a few times when I coughed. It is intense and thank goodness only lasts for a few seconds.  I also had a similar intense jaw pain which I understand is part of the side effects.

I hope you don't experience these side effects too often and wish you well over the days until the side effects begin to ease. Very best wishes to you.

  • Hi Sopranina!

No problem! Jay had had nausea in past cycles but like yourself has never been physically sick he gets anti sickness tablets away with him for his meds but has never had to take them. He was cutting up onions yesterday and his eyes got really watery which is usual with onions but his was quite bad so may just be a symptom. He seems a bit more tired this time too but again, it usually happens just after his infusion plus he needs to go back on the cancer meds after a week of being off them. I think odd we quirks that you notice may or may not be symptoms. Take Care.

  • Hi PattyK

Does your husband have any tips with the feeling of nausea?  I am hoping that I won't have to take the anti sickness tablets but just the feeling of nausea is rather unpleasant too.  I have tried drinking ginger tea and eating ginger biscuits but wondered if anyone else has any tips.

Many thanks and best wishes to you and your husband.

  • I took the anti sickness medication to pre empt any sickness and it worked well.Is there a reason you dont wish to take it

  • Hi Trish

Thank you. It is reassuring to know that these are known side effects but doesn't make it easier to cope. I have tried ginger tea too which helped with the nausea but have now resorted to the anti-sickness tablets - metoclopramide - which I was given with the chemotherapy drugs. They take a while to kick in, so I'll need to work out when best to take them. Today I feel very tired, which I'm sure is also par for the course.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Hi Vicky

Thank you for sharing Jay's experience. It definitely helps knowing that I'm not alone with these symptoms!

All the best to you both!

  • Hi Kath, no reason really but I am unsure how to take them.  I was told to take them half hour to one hour before food so if I feel sick at 10am do I then make sure I eat within the hour? Then two more times throughout the day?

The nurse said to continue taking them. Until they run out? A bit unsure. Otherwise I also have the tablet you put between your top lip and gum if you feel like you are about to be sick.  Are you taking the three times a day meds or the single one?

Thanks for your help.  Best wishes. Trishxxx

  • From memory I think I took one every morning before breakfast.only on the two treatment weeks, not the week off.

Worked well and I was given more as needed from the chemo suite

Hope all goes well for you
