Just diagnosed with bowel cancer of the ascending colon near the hepatic flexure.  Surgery on Tuesday, 7/26...just kinda in awe of al that needs to be done and doing it all, but still in shock.  Giving my all to the preop, testing, etc...but anyone else in shock like me?

  • Hello Marge G

I know what you mean, things seemed a little slow for me but really from my FIT in May I was in for all the tests they needed the MDT treatment plan explained July and operation August 4th. It was amazing. The team worked so hard to ensure that I had all the info I needed and why things were happening

Its a whirlwind of emotions. The Bowel treatment we have is really impressive

You sound really positive and rightly so Bowel Cancer treatment is for the individual and they really know what they’re doing.
Any questions ask away there will be someone that’s been through the same. I’m a LAR which is rectal cancer so I can’t help with any questions you have about your procedure. But I’m thinking of you and wishing you well.
Hospital packings is a good one to think about

    Take care.

  • I second all that Artsie has said.if you feel able to tell us what operation you are having Im sure someone who has had similar will be along .

In the meantime dont forget to pack an extra long charging cable for your phone etc.dry shampoo is handy too

    All the best

  • Hi  and welcome to the board. I’m guessing that you’re not in the UK but I’m sure a lot of the procedures will be pretty similar. Yes there’s a lot of scans, bloods, ECGs etc. but it’s all so the surgeon has the full picture and can get the tumour clean away.
Ive attached a link to a booklet from the Bowel cancer uk board which has a handy list of things to pack for the hospital and other bits about recovery, staging etc.

Hope it goes well and feel free to ask if there’s anything you’re worried about

    Take care

  • Hello Mary .I know exactly what you mean about the shock & yet we want to do the very best for ourselves to rid ourselves of the cancer ..keep on with that positivity.it really does help .

There is so much to take in I know ,have faith in your team and never be afraid of asking lots of questions.keep a note book in your bag to jot down questions..if like me you forget what it was you wanted to ask .

wishinh you all the best for your surgery .

  • Hi Marge, I too have just been diagnosed with exactly the same. Spoke to consultant today and was expecting to be advised about surgery, but I’m being sent for a colonoscopy and chest CT first, was this the same for you?

  • Hi Dais...no, I had a colonoscopy and that is when I was diagnosed.  Follow the good advice of your care givers.  Much love to you!

  • To all, I am having a robotic right hemicolectomy....big stuff, but I am good!

  • Prayers for a speedy recovery!
