Rectal cancer

I have a friend who was just diagnosed with rectal cancer. Pet scan showed 5cm tumor no lymph nodes involved. I am an anal cancer Survivor and had chemo and pelvic radiation. Targeted radiation was not available at the time I had my treatments.

Do most rectal cancer patients have pelvic radiation or Targeted.

Hi Amazing Grace

i had rectal cancer 10cm with no spread and I was in for a LAR and was told that in my case that was the best way forward. Chemo or radiotherapy wasn’t apt. So I was in and it was in the bin.
From reading others posts it varies.
I went along with what their plan was. There was talk of follow up chemo but after the biopsy I was told it wasn’t needed

I really think that they treat the individual. I was close to blocking so they wanted to remove it quite quickly

Amazing GraceI agree with Artsie, no pre treatment, just in to the operation asap before it blocked. Then mop up chemo after. I was a T3. So your friend may not get radiotherapy before as in some cases this can limit any after treatment. Wishing you both well

Amazing Grace, your friend may not need radiotherapy and/or chemo before the gold standard which is an operation to remove the intruder. I went straight to surgery, vascular invasion meant mop up chemo. I think it depends on the MDT team. Take care
