Like a start with just a brief history. I am a 67 year old male who was suffering from ulcerative colitis first diagnosed when I was 33 years of age . My colitis has been well controlled for approximately the last 16 years by using regular infliximab. I recently had a colonoscopy surveillance on the 12th of December 2021 which showed some changes. Things have moved very quickly since then and I was reviewed by consultant surgeon on the 4th of January and had a CT scan the same day. I have a follow-up review on the 11th of January and was told that I have got cancer in my bowl and because of my Ulcerrative colitis history will require either a subtotal colectomy or a panproctocolectomy but the decision was mine not sure which to go for anybody got any experience in this area would be grateful to know what your thoughts are?
The good news is that cancer is at stage T1 To T2 and the scan showed no secondary spread. If I choose the first option I will need follow-up and regular checks possibly may need still to continue with Infliximab If I choose the second option Pan proctocolectomy then I will not need as much regarding follow-up or infliximab but I been told that this procedure will be longer and may have more risks.
My surgery is scheduled for the 20th of January which is next Thursday.
