Hi everybody I’m struggling today

I have had on and off bleeding for years which I put down to piles. In June I had a DVT which made the bleeding much worse.

I finally went to the Drs in December and she found a rectal mass. The gp said the dvt was probably from the cancer

2 weeks ago I had a colonoscopy which showed a 5cm mass and then had a ct and mri scan but no results yet. I have coped over Christmas because of visitors but today when it’s just the two of us it’s bad and I am struggling to cope.

Apart from tiredness from lack of sleep due to rectal pain I feel great but every bit of discomfort eg near my liver I have convinced myself that there is nothing they can do.

My mind is in overdrive

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board from me. The waiting for scan results is very stressful but please remember that thoughts are not facts so please try not to let your imagination run away with you. Bowel cancer is slow growing but also very treatable and even if there is any spread then there are still lots of treatments available.
Please stay away from google -it can be scary and out of date - you can ask about anything you like on here - there is nothing too daft or embarrassing. Once your results are back then the MDT (multi disciplinary team) will meet and decide on a treatment plan for you and things will honestly start to feel a bit better then.

I had a 4cm tumour when first diagnosed and I’m currently 5 years cancer free. If you click on my name then you can see my treatment so far. If you’re struggling with the pain then please ring your doctor for advice.

There will be some tough months ahead but the treatment is doable and we’ll be happy to help and support you through it

    Take care

  • Hi, , as Karen says, a welcome. I will also agree that this is the worse time, before a treatment plan is sorted out. Try not to think there is nothing they can do, I'm sure that there will be something! Take care.

  • Hi Mrsj247

This is a really good place to visit for support and advice. Like Karen says please don’t look up Dr Google. I have really frightened myself in the past

You’re at the hardest time it can take you over and the imagination and stress can be so hard to manage. I tried some meditation through apps on my phone. It just gave me the encouragement to focus on something completely different. It gave me some head space. Treat yourself to things you like.
I had 10cm growth, it’s out and I’m being monitored

once you get your treatment plan you will be able to getting that out and you well.
    Hope that you hear soon

    Hi MrsJ247.

I have just been through that stage, now (in my case) awaiting transfer to another hospital then a date for surgery. It is indeed a scary time. I phoned the Macmillan helpline a couple of times, they are happy to chat to us and you don't need a reason to phone them. The hospital team advised me not to wait to tell my family and friends but to tell them straight away. I'm not sure if that works for you. Also I received a lot of support on here. We can't help worrying but I found talking to people brings some welcome relief.

  • . and . Perhaps  can give the link to the thread, to tell or not? Might help! Wishing you both well.

  • My colon cancer discovered 2 years ago, real shock major op then onto chemo, thought well not to bad dealt with it well with family support  only to be told 3 months the later that they had discovered more cancer, another major op where they also discovered Lymphoma and 15 lymph modes with cancer, shell shocked along with the family.

My strength came from my wife of 50 years 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren they kept me positive and encouraged me to talk about how I felt, how scared I was. You will get through this keep positive, talk about how you feel.

Live for today pack in as much as possible

    Good luck
