Hi all, my father has recently been diagnosed with rectum cancer his mass is quite large and as of 2 days ago he is finding really hard to go to the toilet and its causing him great discomfort. The hospital has given him laxatives but so far nothings changed I was wondering if anyone had resolved this problem in any other way or what I could do to help him be more comfortable. Thanks, Lucy.

  • Hi, , yes I did too, and mine was quite large, about 7cm. I never came off the low fibre/low residue diet I was on before the colonoscopy, until the operation, for precisely that reason. It was quite uncomfy  and I was glad to go in and get it all removed. Might be worth talking to his nurse specialist to see if this is worth a try in his case.  Stay safe

Hi  thanks for the quick reply, he is starting chemo Monday so will have a word with nurses then. I hope you don't mind me asking how things have gone since your op I hope you are keeping well.

  • Hi . Yes low residue is a good idea but if things get really bad ie. severe pain, vomiting then go to A & E as there could be a blockage.

Anyway welcome to the board. If you click on people’s names then their profile page may show their treatment so far but we’re a friendly lot and happy to share advice abs experience

    Take care

  • Just remembered that the bowel screening consultant put me on lactulose to try and get/keep things slowly moving. Yes ,  is correct, if it hurts then get help. My op got brought forward by a week (cancellation) as they were concerned it was blocking. I went straight to the operation, no chemo etc beforehand. I have to admit I am grateful as if the delay had been longer it might be a different  story! I had chemo after, and am clear 2 years after the op, a year after the chemo.
