My partner is undergoing treatment for bowel cancer. Anyone any tips on what I can do to support him, especially through bouts of sickness, tingly fingers and feeling cold. He's stubborn and doesn't want to feel in any way dependent so stealth moves welcome.

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . Sorry to hear about your partner . So hard to see them having to endure the side effects .

Some good ideas on the forum just now . My own mum used cotton gloves to prevent the cold from getting to her hands , I just added a splash of hot water to all her cold drinks to make them Tepid .
Some people have put socks over their door handles ! I think it’s about finding the trigger points and thinking through solutions. Not easy at all .

I noticed my mum’s sickness was worse if she dehydrated! So we kept an eye on her fluid intake but she did protest a bit as she was really struggling with fluids which I totally understood but needs must !

Some people have found ginger to be helpful .
The other thing I always encourage is chatting it all through with his team as they can offer clinical options . My mum had her dose reduced which really took the edge off her side effects.

    Take care ,

  • Hi You’ve had some great ideas from Court. I bought some gloves with little knobbly bits on the palm as I found the steering wheel in the car to be a bit cold at times. Ginger biscuits with his cuppas. I even found cutlery to be chilly at times so used to move it into a warmer room or onto the table where the sunshine was for a bit before tea to warm up. I found a warm wheat bag to put on my arm helped for the first couple of days after IV when my arm was sore.

Its worth keeping a diary of side effects as the nurses will check how things have been and, if you notice any of the side effects are getting worse or lasting longer, then it’s important to mention as a doseage reduction may help. I didn’t mention that my feet were getting tingly as I wanted to finish the course but the nurses stopped me 1 short when they looked at them and I still suffer with them now (4 years later) so don’t let him be stubborn!

    Take care
