Since my last post I have stage 2 rectal cancer and going in for robotic surgery next Thurs for a completion proctectomy. It’s an anxious time, the surgeon has told me that it’s technically challenging due to the amount of scar tissue from previous operations but is confident. The plan is to spend 1 night in ICU and 4 nights on the ward, then home all being well.
I had a really good chat with the anaesthetist last week and prior to surgery he wants me to do 2 hours of exercise each day (not easy when I’m not feeling anywhere 100%) and drink 3 litres of fluid to give me the best chance of enhanced recovery. I’ve managed 10k steps each day so far, struggling though with the fluids.
This is such a difficult journey, work have been so supportive, making one less thing to worry about. I’m not looking forward to next week, but I know I’m in the best hands, doesn’t make it less scary though.
