Change of bowel habits after colonoscopy

Two weeks ago I had a colonoscopy 1 year after my operation, things were not exactly normal before, sometimes I would go days without going to the toilet, and then have to go urgently. Now I find I am going much more often and usually quite soon after I have eaten, has anyone else experienced this. My colonoscopy showed everything was normal.

  • Hi, , yes that's sounds very normal, perhaps unfortunately. Depends where your cancer was, but my rectal cancer has left me with very little rectum so there is no capacity. Though it does occasionally 'back up' and become constipated. From once before, now to 3 or 4 maybe. Take care.

  • I had a sigmund resection, hopefully it will settle down so I could at least be prepared, it could be embarrassing if you were out especially at the moment with so few toilets available.

  • Ok, so that will affect the storage capacity to some extent. Macmillan have a card 'got to go' or something, perhaps get one for more peace of mind? I used it when I was on chemo, gets you the disabled key on occasion if you're desperate! It will settle down. Perhaps check what you've just eaten, just in case its the same thing that triggers it.

  • Thanks  - I have got a disabled toilet key thankfully.

Hi hutchm, I experienced this after my anterior resection. After every meal, I felt the need to go the loo almost immediately. It was awful. After getting not much food and diet advice from my nursing team, I have now really looked into the foods I eat and consume. I feel diet is so important throughout treatment and following surgery etc. I now know the foods that have a bad effect on my bowels and the foods that keep diarrhoea at bay. For example, I no longer drink my morning coffee or any caffeine. Hopefully you can find out what works for you and things will begin to return to normal or as I say, the 'new normal'.

    All the best, take care.
