Hello

I received a letter this week inviting  me for a colonoscopy following a FIT test. I have always been so fit and healthy it’s come as a shock although I am 60+.

I hadn’t given it a thought, but over the last few weeks I have had cramps in my stomach, some lower back pain and  a bit of bloating. Nothing too bad but of course my mind is now working overtime...

I had no obvious blood in my stools or increased frequency/ urgency or weight loss but I have now noticed I don’t  feel I have emptied my bowels completely.

Ive booked in for the colonoscopy but I guess I’m hoping for some positive stories.

My husband is trying to keep upbeat but I’m really struggling. I don’t want to discuss it with friends and family including adult children but am not my usual self and I’m scared of upsetting them and not able to explain why yet.

  • Hello Hooesprings, sorry to hear about the positive FIT test and naturally you are worried abut what the colonoscopy might find. One positive you have is that you are going because of the test you did so you are one step ahead of the game in getting a diagnosis earlier than if you hadn't.  Typical bloke, I couldn't get my mind round the tests they sent to me and they ended up in the bin. Had I done them it might have caught my tumour earlier and saved everyone a lot of trouble.

It is easy to say this but you have to try to keep positive until you have the test and know what you have to deal with. Whatever is found it can be dealt with and there are a lot of people who can help you.

Hope you don't have to wait too long for the colonoscopy.  All the best and fingers crossed for the result.

  • Thanks John

I’m booked in for the colonoscopy in three weeks time- I could have had it a few days earlier but preferred to have it done at my local hospital.

My husband is like you- he nearly died a couple of years ago from coronary symptoms he would not acknowledge. We’ve had a rough couple of years with a sister in law and a little grandson both with cancer and I’m so used to being the strong one. It really helps to be reminded that in the worst case it can be dealt with and people can help. Much appreciated!

  • Hi again, so sorry to hear about the family problems as well. When my nephew was four he had a brain tumour removed. (He is 39 now).  It is so sad to see children with cancer or any other sort of debilitating disease. How is he getting on?

  • Hi

So good to hear positive stories like your nephew’s! My grandson has a rare metastatic cancer but he has finished his treatment and doing really well at the moment so just praying it stays that way.
He’s such a little star and I need to be here for him and the family.

  • Hi

Just wanted to welcome you to the forum too! What a time your family has had and I hope you get the support you need as you work your way through this difficult chapter in your life .

I also hope your grandson continues to amaze and gets the right treatment to find a way through this . Thinking of all the wider family .

Bowel cancer has lots of treatment options so hope we can be of some support to you .

  • hi , mine was picked up by the FIT test, actually the predecessor, so I agree you are caught fairly early.  This forum is the place to vent your feelings and ask questions. If you want more details on a person, just click on their name, and it is helpful if you fill in your details as well. Hope all goes well at the colonoscopy, take care.

  • Hi Court

I’m certainly learning lot about cancer recently and although I’m hoping and praying my colonoscopy doesn’t show cancer, I prefer to go in with a bit of knowledge about treatment etc. Thank you so much!

  • Hi Gemmary

Thanks for the tip about people’s journeys and I will fill mine in. Yes, am hoping even if it’s bad news, I’ve been caught at early stage. I will update!

  • Hi Hooesprings, like you no symptoms, picked up on the bowel test. The people on this site have been very kind. I also contacted the Macmillan nurses a lot. Hope all goes well for you at a difficult time. Sending hugs xx

  • Hi

Just reading your post again . I am sincere hoping your FIT test is attributed to other reasons . So many other causes for it and the symptoms you have . A lot of people come here with similar symptoms and thankfully it’s not cancer . I  am  holding out for that for you .
    Take care ,
