Hi everyone. I’m having a laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy next week.
In your experiences how long did your surgeries take, how long were you in hospital for and what helped in your recoveries? What about eating and drinking? Will I need to be on ‘mushy foods’ for ages after surgery? Thanks in advance, Mimi B
Hi
Just want to welcome you to the forum .
Given its laparoscopic you might recover quite quickly .

I have copied in a booklet from Macmillan and Bowel cancer U.K. on post op recovery .
My mum had open surgery so went to High dependency for two nights with an epidural . She was then transferred to a surgical ward with oral meds . Her bowels started to work quite quickly and she was eating soft foods . She was encouraged to take a small walk with help .
She did not have a stoma .
When she got back home she was able to do all her own self care .
I think if you have a stoma it’s a different recovery but hopefully others will pop on . My mum’s was a long time ago now and to be honest it has never given her too many issues but was quite noisy for a bit . Gurgled a lot .
take care ,

I had the same as you 1 year ago, I was in hospital for about 4 nights, and had to eat a soft diet for a few weeks, the nurses will give you a diet sheet, I was walking every day almost immediately, I wasn’t allowed to drive or pick up anything heavy for 6 weeks. I was back in the gym 4 times a week after a couple of months, and now completely back to normal.
Hi, Is your husband back home now or is he still in hospital?
Wishing him better and a full recovery
He's home but having appointments every couple of days to return for assessment his bladder isn't working right so he's got catheter in at home and loose bowel leakage constantly having to wear nappies, he's so sleepy all the time
Before I went into the operating theatre they marked my stomach in two places luckily when I came around I didn’t have a stoma , I think I was in the operating theatre at least 5 hours.
