My 37 year old son was diagnosed yesterday with a malignancy in the sigmoid colon.  They could not get the endoscope past the obstruction.  He has had some abdominal cramps for some time, he and GP thought IBS.  No weight loss, no anaemia, no visible blood.  Blood found on FIT test.  He has two  small children.  I am petrified that the tumour is big and past the point that the scope could not go.  He is going to see a surgeon on Tuesday to discuss surgery.  It has been suggested he could have robotic surgery in London.  I am desolate.

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the board. Unfortunately some GPS misdiagnose Bowel Cancer as it is commonly found more in the older generation. Is there any family history of it? The waiting for meetings and scan results is very stressful but hopefully after Tuesday there will be a treatment plan in place for him. I can’t remember anyone on here recently having had robotic surgery although there has been a couple that I can think of on the Bowel Cancer UK site.

I’ve attached a booklet about Bowel cancer in young people which you might like to take a look at. I won’t tell you not to worry because that’s what mums do but please stay away from google - it’s out of date, inaccurate and downright scary in places. You can ask anything you like on here and we’ll try and help.

There is a lot of treatment for Bowel cancer nowadays but it can be a tough journey so try to look after yourself as well so you can help support your son and his family.

Please let us know how it goes on Tuesday?

    Take care
