Hi all- I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 2 years ago, had surgery, an ileostomy and chemo. Seemed to go ok, finished chemo and had the ileostomy reversed in January this year. Then, first routine check (colonoscopy) revealed another tumour in the colon and spread to both lobes of liver. Having seen the surgeons etc yesterday I’ve been told there’s no surgical option and there may possibly be some chemo but that will be dependent on detailed DNA sequencing for which there are not yet any results. Basically if the gene sequence is the same as the previous tumour there’s no point in more chemo either ( I think I’ve got that right, it was quite a stressful consult). Now I’m in a kind of twilight zone with real or imagined abdominal pains and wondering how long is left! I’m also wondering how it will make me feel physically - I’ve read some of the information but there are a lot of possible effects. Anyone who’s had/having similar would welcome your views.
Hello Vincent,
My husband (whisperer) is second time too so I /we understand the anxiety.
His metastasised to lung not liver.
Like yourself surgery was not considered an option. I wish I knew more to help ease your mind. Hopefully others will be able to give some advice.
In the mean time take the best care you can. You're not alone.
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to respond and I wish your family safest travels going forward.
Hi Vincent,
I'm sorry to read of your situation. In some ways it's similar to my own experience -- see my profile. I had a liver resection operation aborted due to the increased number of mets they found when they opened me up.
However, the mets were found to be RAS Wild (whatever that means) which I believe was the most favourable result, and I was put on a chemo mix of Folfox and Vectabix. I believe Vectabix is more akin to immunotherapy than actual chemo (anyone with proper knowledge please correct me!) . But the results after 6 cycles was very encouraging, and I'm now on cycle 10 of 12.
My message is 'don't give up' see what the cytology results produce and take it from there.
Wishing you all the best.......
Hi Sierraoscar
Sorry to hear about your situation. However I would absolutely get a second opinion if you have picked that up correctly. Bowel cancer has normally a few lines of treatment. My own mum actually stayed on first line chemo for a second time. She had some surgical options after that. Then another recurrence she went onto a second line treatment and got another good response. She was inoperable twice but chemo turned that around twice.
I am wondering if they are saying no point in using first line treatments again but at that point second line chemo can be an option for most people.
If you google Nice guidelines for stage 4 bowel cancer you will see the protocol.
Let me see if I can still find a very helpful booklet. Some people who are inoperable stay on a maintenance dose of Chemo for years.
My mum had a significant spread to her liver. We could hardly make it up the stairs that night after see what I could only describe as a fruit bowel of tumours. She lived 15 years after that diagnosis. Chemo on its own can be very powerful.
I am trying to remember correctly but she had two liver recurrences, One lung and then a further recurrence in her lung.
She lived a wonderful life in between treatments, traveled all over the place and gave us a legacy we are grateful for.
One step at a time. Getting a good treatment plan in place is a good start.
I will look for the booklet now.
