My Prospects

Approx 11 weeks ago I underwent surgery for bowel cancer. The surgeon carried out an extended right hemicolectomy. I now feel that I have made, 'pretty much', a full recovery. I have returned to the bad diet I have always enjoyed, and other than a slight tendency towards constipation, digestion and bowel movements are largely normal. So I guess you are wondering why I am posting.

Next week I will be undergoing a left hemicolectomy.

Has anyone else had both left and right colectomy, full colon removal, and if so how much of a recovery might I be expected to make?

I would very much appreciate any input.

  • From local paper following publication of 'Never Events' posted on BCUHB Web Site.

One of the most serious incidents involved a patient at Bangor's Ysbyty Gwynedd, who had been scheduled to have part of their bowel removed after it was found positive for cancer. Before the surgery, doctors had marked the area of the tumour with a tattoo inside the bowel to guide surgeons during the procedure. However, during the operation, the surgeon could not locate either the tumour or the expected tattoo in the area. A second tattoo was then identified a few centimetres away and was mistakenly assumed to be the correct surgical marker. As a result, the surgeon carried out an extended right hemicolectomy instead of the left-sided surgery that should have taken place - leading to the removal of a healthy section of bowel instead of the cancerous tissue.

  • Amazing recovery, so good to hear you are well now. My surgeon is hoping not to fit a stoma, but I do wonder if it may be a better option.

That was some journey you went through. My cancer has been caught really early thanks to a routine colonoscopy after having polyps removed a few years ago.

    Many thanks for your reply.

  • All the best with your treatment
