I had a colon resection 15 months ago. Lately I have had severe heartburn and unable to eat. My cancer scans remain clear. I do not know if my current symptoms are related to my operation or to a general virus. Has anyone suffered similar problems? Thanks.
Hi Wendy1947 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.
Have you spoken to your CNS (cancer nurse specialist) about your heartburn and not being able to eat? If not, that would be a good place to start to rule out anything to do with your cancer diagnosis.
While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Hi Wendy
I had OGD and Colonoscopy in July 2025.
OGD showed gastritis and hiatus hernia and I have been prescribed Lansoprazole for this. No more heartburn.
COLONOSCOPY showed a tumour for which I had resection surgery in August 2025 followed by a course of chemo, October to January 2026. Fingers crossed.
Finding I dont have much energy these days so looking for a remedy for this.
Best wishes
Hi Wendy1947, I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2022. I had an intensive course of radio therapy, then a lower anterior resection, which all went very well. About 18 months post treatment I started getting the most awful heartburn / acid reflux and like you I was unable to eat or enjoy food. I discussed my symptoms with my GP who was marvellous, she specialises in gut health. She simply prescribed Gaviscon extra and advised me to take either a probiotic or eat natural yoghurt every morning. I did this from day one and my symptoms disappeared and I feel great and can eat most things now. This worked for me, it may not be suitable for everyone, but it may be worth a try. I wish you well.
