My Dad has had 11 cycles of the Flofox chemotherapy, he’s had his ups and down, hurdles thrown in the way.
We got told that his chemo is stopping, CT results good no spread.
If he’s been told that they will do 3 monthly review / scans.

Does this mean the cancer has gone?

He is currently an inpatient with some fluid build up and the oncologist said “review in the new year but no more chemo and do 3 monthly reviews”.

  • Has your dad had surgery ?

It depends , sometimes they will shrink a tumour to the point it’s not visible but if they have not had surgery then it could potentially regrow again and they would look at more treatments at that point .

If he has had surgery and post op chemo they are possibly very happy with the outcome and he is cancer free .

You can definitely approach his team with his permission to find out . They should have explained it to him .

Take care and hope your dad gets home soon .

  • He hasn’t had the surgery due to the tumour being too large. I’ve done some research and feel it’s small enough to not need anymore chemo but will be monitored to then potentially needing surgery, if it regrows.

I was with him at the time and understood it as that, it’s just some other influence has now put doubt in my mind that wasn’t what she said, as they don’t believe mine and my Dads words that is what she said.

we are focusing on getting him well to get out of hospital and in recovery. Focusing on getting an appointment in the new year to discuss the finer details.

I am feeling mixed emotions because at one point he was not even going to attempt treatment so if it’s working then I feel so over the moon but not counting my chickens before they hatch! Hatching chick

  • He has come a long way . Definitely a win if he has had lots of shrinkage .

There is definitely time to enjoy this news and restore his health . That’s so important . They would never run straight into surgery anyway as they always wait around six weeks so plenty of time to focus on other aspects just now and you can regroup in the New year and clarify it all with his team .

It’s so hard in these meetings to take it all in and remember all the details . Trust your instincts and it sounds as though you know what you’re doing going forward anyway .

You sound a wonderful support to your dad .

I am sure he appreciates it very much .

    Take care ,

  • Try and concentrate on leaving hospital and getting better. Three years ago I had surgery for stage 3 colon cancer followed by 12 weeks COPAX chemo. Then last year I had stage 2 prostate cancer and a prostatectomy  followed, not related to my bowel cancer. Then to make matters worse I had double heart bypass surgery this summer. I’m 70, fit and doing well. I’m happy to still be alive and live for today. I have regular blood testing, scans and colonoscopies and so far I’m cancer free. Unfortunately the trouble with being diagnosed with cancer is that you’re always wondering if it’ll come back, particularly when awaiting the latest follow up tests. I know it’s hard but for me I try not to think about it and live for the now. None of us knows what’s around the corner.
