Rectal cancer

In December 23 I had a coloscopy as part of the bowel cancer screening program which detected a LST close to the anal verge. A few polyps were removed. The biopsies didn’t show cancer. In the February I had TAMIS and recovered quickly from this. In March I got the bad news that cancer was in the tumour that had been removed which meant another operation, Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection (APR) in April. After the operation I found it uncomfortable to sit but it improved but still not like it used to be. Last year I finished a course of chemotherapy in December. Unfortunately the cancer has returned. The last coloscopy was clear with a healthy colon but the cancer has spread to my lungs and para aortic lymph nodes. A month ago my left leg swollen up with lymphoedema. I use to run 4 miles every week and do twenty two kilometres on the exercise bike but now have little energy. I’m on blood thinners as there appear to be blood clots in my upper inner left leg. The oncologist told me the sample taken from me will be retested to see if I can have immunotherapy and what chemo but this is taking much longer than expected. Whilst this delay goes on the cancer can become more advanced. Still waiting for an MRI which has been mentioned when I spoke last to the oncologist.

  • The first round of chemotherapy was last year which was oxaliplatin and 5FU starting in the summer, eight cycles of three. Should be starting irinofecan and capecitabine in the next week or two. Had a recent MRI and waiting to hear if I am suitable candidate for radiation therapy. I’m currently on blood thinners due to blood clots in one leg but cancerous swollen aortic lymph nodes in combination with the clots are causing lymphoedema. This will be palliative chemotherapy to extend life. I have leg, genital and back pain which is worst at night especially in my lower back despite taking painkillers but am better during the day. Very difficult getting any good quality of sleep. Given the poor prognosis it looks unlikely I’ll reach state pension age.

  • I hope the chemotherapy goes well and the lymphoedema is able to be got under control.
