Good morning guys
Just wanted to reach out as I'm feeling very low today. I am still stuck in hospital following my surgery on Tuesday to remove rectal cancer. Emotionally I feel so conflicted I'm happy to have had the cancer removed (hopefully) but the pain/discomfort from surgery my new ileostomy to contend wow its just a lot
Morning Simonee0c868d and sending you a big virtual hug. Well done on getting the tumour removed and now’s the time to focus on your recovery. I found the weekends to be tough because it would be a different consultant doing the rounds and no stoma nurses working so I couldn’t be discharged. Hopefully next week will see you getting home. Practice cleaning and changing your stoma pouch and walk up and down the ward when you can. Don’t chase the pain so take the painkillers offered and remember my mantra of ‘this too will pass’.
Hope your next post sees you home

In February 2023 I had a tumour removed from my sigmoid colon. I remember waking up after the operation and feeling glad to just be alive. Twelve weeks of CAPOX chemo followed. Then in the spring of 2024 I had a cancerous prostate removed. Then earlier this year I had double heart bypass surgery. Every time just thankful to still be alive.
There will always be people a lot less fortunate than ourselves.
Hi Dewibach, Just wanted to say what a brilliant attitude to adversity. An inspiration to anyone feeling down on their luck. All the very best for your recovery journey.
Hi Simonee
Just sending you a virtual hug. I've had a couple of surgeries - do keep on pushing them to manage your pain well. (Sometimes they had to try 3 different drugs on me, to find something that made things ok). And as someone else said, big beliver in moving - I took my dripstand for regular walks, and do think that movment helped my body 'reset' & feeling stronger. And get a good nights rest - I always ask for a sleeping tablet ;-) Virtual hug & fingers crossed for a quick release!
Hello Simonee
Sorry to hear you’re feeling low - as Kareno62 says weekends in hospital are always tough - and you’ve been through a lot both physically in having the surgery and mentally in dealing with the consequences. Sending you a virtual hug and positive thoughts for getting home in the coming week.
I think anesthesia does something to our heads because I am always a bit down after coming out of surgery. Make a list of things you are grateful fo and keep it near at hand. Then distract yourself with something... music, TV, a good books, surfing the internet... anything you enjoy.
An new stoma is overwhelming at first. It's like being thrown in the deep end and told to swim. I woke up with 2 stomas... colostomy and urostomy. It was a huge adjustment. You will have a tough few weeks but soon enough to will catch on and everything will become routine. Believe it or not, there will come a day when you forget about it.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
