Nuclear scan

Simon's ureta was cut during his bowel cancer surgery he has a back drain to his kidney. He has to go to Leeds nuclear scan on his kidney

 Has anyone heard of this??

  • Hi

Yes-I’ve had a petscan which is a type of nuclear scan. It means there is a small amount of a radioactive tracer injected into the body via a cannula. This liquid will highlight various tissues and organs like other scans do, and let the doctors see what things are like inside.

It’s nothing to worry about-it took a bit longer than a ct scan as you need to wait while the tracer liquid goes round your body.

  • Thanks for your reply I was really worried about it.

  • When you hear the word nuclear and it’s not explained it can be a worry, but it’s like a ct scan, and he’s probably had them before. It’s not enclosed like an mri scan-it’s just lying on a table with the machine going over the body like the ct scan does. I found the scan itself no problem-it was quite short-just had the wait for the tracer to go round my body first, which took about an hour. I don’t know if that will be exactly the same for Simon, but I had mine done to check everything to plan my surgery accurately.

  • Yes they need to plan his surgery hopefully to remove his nephrostomy drain

Thanks for this information it helped a lot xx

  • I had a nuclear scan the other week to see if cancer had spread elsewhere. This involved being infused with a low grade radioactive material via a simple cannula; waiting for 3 hours to let it circulate then lying still on a special x ray device for about 30 minutes until the scan was complete. Drink plenty of water afterwards to flush the substance from your system. It seems they use this for different patients for different reasons. Quite painless and I drove myself home. Remove metal beforehand like an MRI.

  • Thank you Rosie13. No spread was detected and I was given the result the following day.
