Bowel cancer prognosis and exercise class trial

I have seen on tv about some excercise class trials for cancer patients and how they help the prognosis of bowel cancer patients in particular. When i have made enquiries with my oncologist, cancer nurses and macmillan nurses no-one seems to know about it.

Although at the moment I have times when moving from a chair is a mammoth task (still on 7 of 13 folfox chemo preventative for stage 3 sigmoid tumour - removed in march) I am very keen to try building up my strength in this way.

    • Hello and best wishes with your treatment. My husband was offered both prehab physio and once he's 4 weeks post surgery will be offered post op physio too. We are in Yorkshire and the "Active Together" programme offers tailored support for people with certain types of cancer. I have seen other people on the forum who have been offered similar help, but it's maybe a bit of a postcode lottery at the moment.
    • My husband goes to a local sports centre where they run the sessions so it may be worth enquiring locally to see if a physio or PT could work out a programme for you. My husband was tested pre surgery for general fitness including sitting to standing and grip strength. The aim is to improve these post treatments so they are better than pre diagnosis and also to encourage him to be more active going forward.
    • It might be challenging during your chemotherapy but I'm sure anything you could do would be helpful.
    • Good luck. Motivation is the main thing and it sounds like you have plenty!
  • Thank you for your reply. Very helpful. I am in East Yorkshire so I will pursue options. Best wishes to you and your husband.
