Mucus and grapefruit

Does anyone know if grapefruit can cause anal mucus following a stoma operation

  • I think citrus fruit can be quite tough on the digestive system when you’ve had a stoma formed and can upset things even if it’s not a direct cause of the mucus. What about giving up the grapefruit and seeing how it goes?

  • Hi  Is Simon up and about or lying down a lot? If he’s lying down I’m wondering if that’s allowing the mucus to collect then it feels like he’s losing a lot where it might not be as obvious if he was up and about all day? x

  • He was getting up and walking around but he has a really bad cold at the moment and is coughing a lot which hurts his stoma. He seems to go one step forward and 2 steps back

  • I agree with Karen from my own experience-lying down too much allows liquid to pool inside and it will seem like more comes out at once. I always hold my hands over my stomas to cough and sneeze as it can put strain on them.

I know it’s hard to get up and move if you’re not feeling well, but it’s really best to move around as much as you can after surgery.
