Thining hair

At the beginning of February I found out that I had a blockage in my large bowel. By the end of February I'd had surgery which was successful. All the mass had been removed. It was malignant. A few months later I started chemo, just in case. CAPOX made me rather poorly so I stopped taking the tablets. I was told to go to MAU to get checked out. To cut this short, blood tests indicated that I'd got a blood clot. A chest scan didn't find a clot but showed that the cancer had spread. Another scan of tummy area found the clot and more cancer cells.

I know what this means and I've started a different chemo.

I've found that I can't say that "I've got cancer"

I can explain what's happened but it feels wrong to say that "I've got cancer".

Sorry for whittering on.

  • Sorry, I'm new to all this. I was trying to ask about hair thining.

I've had 2 rounds of FOLFOX and my hair has started to thin out. Does anyone know how long it goes on for?

  • Hi  ,

I can’t answer the hair thinning as I was on capeticine (I lost hair all the way through but it only thinned, it didn’t disappear).

I had an op first then on my first chemo appointment I sat in the cancer centre looking around thinking ‘how sad all those people have cancer’…. It was only when given the chemo drug that it struck home and I cried for two hours.

it’s very normal…. It’s your own experience. Do and say what feels right for you.

wishing you all the best with your treatment.

  • I was on capecitabine, all through my treatment my hair tinned and bears didn't grow.  But now 3 weeks later the beards are growing gradually,  even though my hair is still tinned.

Thank you for your lovely message. It all feels unreal. I know what needs to be done, but it's like I'm on auto pilot.

  • YIDAA Thank-you for your reply. Good news about your beard.

  • Hi Den64,

Don’t apologise you’re not whittering on. It’s a very surreal feeling and even now nearly 4.5 years from diagnoses , that period sometimes feels like a bad dream. I went through a long period on autopilot.

I had FOLFOX in 2021 after LAR surgery. I was prescribed 6 rounds but only managed 5 due to complications.

My hair thinned a lot at the top and across the front, a bit like and upside down ‘T’ shape (I'm female & I’ve always had very fine hair anyway and not a huge amount) so I felt it was quite noticeable, however it didn’t disappear. I actually got a wig which made me feel less self conscious.

After treatment I cut my hair very short & I think it was about 3-4 months before I could really notice it was growing back. It grew back curly but the curls didn’t last long.

At the time I told my myself it showed the chemo was getting around my body and doing it’s job.

Wishing you all the best and please let us know how you get on.

  • Net77 thank you for your reply.

  • Hi  ,please feel free to express yourself in any way that comes to you , you are never going to be seen as " wittering on" Slight smile a cancer diagnosis is a bomb dropped on us and it shakes our whole world.

I had a LAR in Dec 24,mop up chemo by Capox from Feb till May and my hair kind of stopped growing ,really - didn't lose any,  but I have naturally thick, wavy hair . Now, 3 months after chemo my hair seems as it was before cancer.

You keep smiling if you can - you can get through this and you are not alone Blush

  • Hiya, I’m on cycle 10 of FOLFOX.  I was lucky I started with very long fine but thick hair.  I lost a quite a bit the first two or three cycles but then it eased off.  I would say I’ve lost about half but I’ve had a lot of cycles.  I’ve cut it a bit shorter and it passes as normal ish.

I’ll be interested to see if and how it grows back and if I’ll need to go short to incorporate new growth. I loved my long hair, it was my USP and I miss it a lot.

I thought washing would make it worse so originally left it over a week between washes but now I’ve found washing actually helps so I don’t let it get greasy now. Don’t brush and make sure you comb gently.

Good luck and I hope the fall out stops soon.
