Stage 4 Bowel cancer - spread extensively to liver

My husband has 2 x tumours removed from his colon on 7 April 2025. It was deemed a success, with nothing showing in any lymph nodes, etc, so no need for mop up chemo. He was recovering well and, then, after about 3 weeks after the operation he started to feel very unwell. Backwards and forwards to GP surgery. Developed DVT’s in both calves. Upshot is that a couple of week’s ago it was found that the cancer has spread extensively to his liver with small nodules also found in his lungs. We have been told by 2 x consultants that they have never seen this happen so quickly before. The liver is so bad, they can’t do surgery. He started a 50% dose of FOLDAX chemo yesterday, but the chances of it helping at all are extremely slim. If it doesn’t work, he’s been given 2/3 months to live. We’re still in shock and world shattered.

  • Hi

My mum had very quick recurrences but che I did pull it all back in twice . She went from inoperable to operable each time .

It’s a tough time though as you have to sweat it out with the unknowns . However my mum lived for 15 years with a stage 4 diagnosis. Although her tumours were large if you are chemo responsive and due to the rate of cell division that’s when it seems to work best . I do think it depends on how responsive to chemo he is at this stage . Micro disease does grow without chemo .
Thid is not a situation without hope but it is a tough one . Sending you both loads of love and support .

  • Thank you for your message. Bless your mum and you. You’ve both been through a lot. Unfortunately my husband’s liver is covered in tumours and he’s already jaundiced. Without chemo, of if it doesn’t work, he’s been given 2/3 months to live. We’re hoping beyond hope that chemo does have some effect. Take care.

  • I will hope with you that it does . X
