Afraid cancer has returned

Last year, exactly a year today actually, I was rushed in after suffering pain and extreme weight lose for a couple of months. It was found after CT that I had a blockage in my bowel. After emergency surgery I had half my large bowel taken away. I was then told after tests on the blockage that it was cancerous and had gone into several lymph nodes. Started chemo in July and was given the all clear in December.

I had a routine CT scan 2 weeks ago and have just received a phone call to go and see the consultant next week to discuss results. Now I am extremely worried the scan has shown something.....is it normal to see consultant after routine scan after being told over phone or by letter of previous results??? Thought I would just have a letter saying everything was fine but having to go and 'discuss' the results face to face is worrying me something silly!

Anyone had this before?

  • Hi  I had appointments after each scan with the consultant and my CEA results were advised over the phone by my colorectal support nurse.
This is why it’s known as ‘scanxiety’ but once you’ve got a few clear ones under your belt then the worry and anxiety will gradually lessen. If I’m honest, it never fully goes away but just rests further back in your mind.

Please let us know how you get on?

    Take care

  • Scanxiety is REAL. I thought I was losing my mind the first time. I swear it was as bad as the waiting period between finding out I had a tumor and getting the treatment plan. Crazy isn't it?

  • Hi, just to let you know that unfortunately the scan did show it has returned. It has gone into my liver and stomach lining. So the plan is chemotherapy to try and stop it spreading any further so got everything crossed.

  • Hi

Always a blow to hear of a recurrence . But there is still a lot of hope that successful chemo will open up other options . My mum had a spread and three recurrences but still made it a further 15 years before age made her unable to tolerate more treatment .

You have approaches like Hipec and there are surgeons out there working in specialist centres . They do like chemo first to stabilise things again and review from there .

Hope you are holding up ok .

    Take care ,
