Can a colonoscopy be wrong?

Hi everyone I desperately need some advice please. In 2023 I lost 3 stone very quickly. Went to the doctors and had bloods done and was very anemic to the point I had to have an urgent blood transfusion. I had a positive fit test of 39 so was referred on a 2 week pathway. Everything was fine nothing was found. I was fine for a while had the odd iron transfusion when my levels dipped. Since January this year I've been unwell. Just feeling generally poorly. Went back to doctors hemoglobin was very low again at 95 and iron level was 2. Had an iron transfusion 6 weeks ago which hasn't improved hb. I did a fit test yesterday again as requested by Dr, they've just rang me and said the results where over 400 so I've been referred on cancer pathway again. Could the first colonsocopy of been wrong? I'm worried. I'm only 35 female with 3 children. I've felt so unwell for 3 months and just don't seem to be improving

  • Colonoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosis. I am prepping for a surveillance colonoscopy and my doctor was very explicit about doing the prep properly. He said a bad prep could mean that something might be missed.

However, there are other possible explanations for your symptoms. If the colonoscopy is clear again, I'd push them hard to find the source.

  • Thank you for your reply. On my first one the report said my bowel prep was good. I'm just wondering if anyone has had it missed on their first colonsocopy. I have had CT scans, mri scans and they found nothing but kidney stones so there is no reason for my bleeding. I don't have piles, and they tested me for celiac etc the first time.
