Hi everyone.

Could I ask if anyone who has had a bowel resection has any information on taking injectable weight loss drugs (in my case Mounjaro). I have had 2 starting doses so far with a couple of episodes of mild stomach cramps over 2 weeks. I've read that these will subside over time but I would think that would be for people who haven't had bowel cancer. I will speak to my colorectal team at some point but if anyone in my position has direct personal experience I would love to read your thoughts.

Thank you.

Colin.

  • Hi Colin

I am sorry to hear that you have been having some tummy cramps with your weight loss drugs.

I do think checking with your colorectal team would be the best plan. The main thing is that any doctor involved in your care is kept informed or any issues.

You could also give the Support Line a call and talk to one of the nurses who may be able to give you some more information on this.

I did a search on the weight loss medication you are taking on here and it didn't really show much, so it may be that people who have tried it have not posted on here about it.

  • Hi Karen, I’ve already messaged Colin on this subject x

  • Hi Jane.

    Thanks for the reply.

I contacted my colorectal team but they couldn't answer so they've emailed the surgeon and oncologist for advice. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. In the meantime I'll try and get hold of my GP.

I will post a description on here of their advice for anyone with the same inquiry.

    Colin.

  • Hi what was the outcome? I'm keen to know as also considering mounjaro.  I've piled on the weight since my surgery

  • Hello Dondon. I did eventually get a reply but as these medicines are relatively new information is sketchy. However, I was advised by a colorectal nurse that it was ok to carry on as long as I felt ok but to watch out for any unplanned weight loss. The last bit of that sounds a bit daft when you're taking a drug to lose weight but I had taken a break from it for about a month by then and as I'd read about stopping, my appetite came back and the weight started going back on. So I was happy to carry on.

I have been taking it since May this year (with a 1 month break) and in that time I have lost 3 stone very easily. The only side effect I had was a bit of constipation early on, which is a common side effect but that evened out after a short time. I had at times used laxatives ok. Drinking lots of water is advised.

Starting on 2.5mg I am currently using 10mg and I feel ok. It has worked for me.

I can't speak for everyone as to side effects but my advice is to try it but just listen to your body if your unsure. Read the patient information and speak to your colorectal team if you think you need to.

The trouble is that it's very expensive, but I'm told that Wegovy is just as good an option that works well and is way cheaper. I'm looking at switching to it myself

I hope this has gone some way to help and whatever decision you make I wish you all the best.

    Colin.
