My Dad has rectal cancer and had radiotherapy which had a partial response. There were delays in his care which resulted in it spreading to his liver…
He had 4 rounds of Capox which shrunk everything down really small then had a liver resection which was successful .
Due to other delays its now been 8 months since hes been off chemo and when coming to operate on his rectal tumour they are now saying its too large to do the standard operation due to margins and the tumour now locally advanced ( near the prostrate)
What happens from here? Its been 2 weeks now since having this dropped on us and nothing has been done. No mention of chemo or anything? I feel like we are back to square one. We keep ringing the colorectal nurses and no answers.
Has anyone else been in this situation? Thanks for reading
Hi CxO
Just want to say I am so sorry to hear this . But given he is chemo responsive I would hold onto that . But it’s really harsh to discover this and keep your spirits up .
The other aspect to consider is a second opinion . Not sure were you are located but some names for second opinions come up here from time to time .
Hold on tight . It’s not the first time my mum went back to the drawing board and hope a good plan is being pulled together .
Sending much love ,

Hi CxO
We’ve spoken before so I just wanted to check with you-has the TPE surgery you mentioned before now been ruled out? You were saying that this had been an option before?
I hope that if surgery is not on the cards now, that a suitable plan is being formulated going forward.

Hey Court thankyou for your reply.
He is under Leeds St James which i thought was a top hospital so didnt think of getting a second opinion.
Im jusy hoping they are going to come up with another plan but its the weeks and weeks of waiting thats annoying.
Thankyou x
Hey Sarah
Thankyou so much for your reply.
The TPE was offered but then there was doubt of it because of my dads age and fitness.
He did a fitness test 2 weeks ago but heard nothing back. Its been like getting blood out of a stone weve been ringing but nobody ever gets back to us.
The uncertainty is really effecting us all mentally. We just want a plan of action wether it be TPE or other treatment. Then i was wondering what happened if no TPE can be done? Would it be chemo?
ive tried googling everything but just keep hitting brick walls.
Thanks x
Hi CxO
Gosh, how frustrating for you all not to have the information you need yet. Obviously, I’ve had a different cancer, but if the TPE had not been possible for me I would have gone onto chemo(although a different type).
As court said, your dad was obviously responsive to chemo before and so that may be an option again, but it’s so disappointing to read that nobody is getting back to you to answer your questions. Please keep trying via the nurses or the consultant’s secretary and email in addition to calling so that is on record that you’ve been asking. I wish you luck!
