Good Morning please can anyone help me with how long after a CT scan are you supposed to receive the results? My son had a scan following the ileostomy reversal. All ops have been successful however he had blood tests which he has been given a positive result within a week. However the scan results still haven't been received 6 weeks later? Apparently he has been informed they could take up to 12 weeks? Is this normal?
Hi Hammy,
I don't know the answer, but I thought I'd share my experiences in case they help. I would imagine it would be different for each hospital.
My initial CT scan was two weeks before my colonoscopy. I never received a result from that one, although it was assessed as part of the rest of the scans.
I then had the colonoscopy and as a result was sent for another CT scan of the rest of my body on the same day.
I got the results from both of those about two weeks afterwards. So that would be about four weeks after my initial scan.
I then had another scan while in hospital and the results of that one took about an hour to come back - but I suspect that's because it was while I was in the hospital and it was to see if I needed to be moved to a more intensive care environment.
If the hospital has said 12 weeks is normal then that might just be the time it takes in your area depending on the amount of staff/demand.
Sorry I can't be of more help than that and I hope that you get the results soon and can set your mind at rest!
Best wishes
Cerysm.
Thanks for this. It just seems a long wait I'm sure they told him 2 weeks after the scan. So I guess we just wait possibly another 6 weeks! It is difficult when he doesn't allow me to attend and keeps it all very private!! His way of coping and as an adult I have to respect his wishes of course. As a mum I will be relieved when he gets the all clear : )
Hi Hammy19 Yes that does seem a frustratingly long length of time. I know some one recently posted that they had their scan on 30/5 and didn’t get a letter with the results until 9/7 but that’s a lot less than 12 weeks. Could he see if his doctor has heard anything? I know I’ve had hospital appointments recently and the follow up letter has been dictated within a day or two but then not been typed up or sent for a few weeks. Perhaps a quick phone call to his colorectal support nurse - they might be able to see if the results are back or may be able to confirm how long they are taking?
Take care
Karen x
Hi I think they can take a while. I had a lot of waiting around the day my scan was done and because it was surveillance the radiologist was sympathetic. He told me whilst I am being scanned he has a brief look. If something lights up it goes to the top of the pile. He must have felt sorry for me because he said nothing lit up so wouldn't be going to top however, they are then sent off to be scrutinised. I can't say if your son has a good or bad result but maybe if it was weeks ago it's a good sign. Bloods are back the next day, we are able to phone our specialist nurses for results x
