Hi everyone
I'm Steph from the Community team
Here is a new thread for carers, family and friends. This is a space for you to chat, share experiences and support each other through issues related to your loved ones bowel cancer. The previous thread will shortly be locked as it was getting rather long which can make it difficult to navigate.
Please remember that we also have other dedicated spaces on the Community for carers, family and friends. These spaces exist so you can support each other away from members of the forum who might be dealing with their own cancer diagnosis:
Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum
You would be welcome to set up another new thread like this in one of the above forums. Please just let us know if you would like any help?
We hope you will continue to find lots of support from each other and the Community. We're here to help, so please do let us know if you have any questions or support needs by emailing us at community@macmillan.org.uk
Les rang me at 4 this morning to say he has been moved to another ward. Does not look like he will be getting home. I have been up since 4 worrying but we did the right thing getting him into hospital. No wonder he never wants to go in as getting out is a nightmare xx
The only good thing is he is in the best hands and does take a bit of pressure off you although back and forwards to hospital is tiring you must try and look after yourself and rest a bit. Xmas is the last thing in my mind and I dare say yours too. I will be thinking of you both.
Stay strong

Thank you Helen. He is in a ward on his own so has no company but does have a book. They will take bloods again and see what is going on from there. Just worried sick xx
Hi Distraught
We have been through this a few times with mum . I actually see it as a good sign .
They are normally received through emergency department and depending the hospital structure onto an assessment unit or a medical receiving wards . These are very short term turn around wards but they are well enough to be moved onto them . Fluids , antibiotics and electrolytes quickly restored , then mum went onto oral antibiotics and independent self care and home a few days later .
There is normally a big push to get all possible patients home as they have a reduced staffing over Christmas and will want emergency beds available. I literally went to visit mum on Monday and told that she was going home that evening or early the next day . She went in on Thursday completely unresponsive. Better to be in a single room with covid circulating.
I would be prepared to be surprised at how quickly you might find him discharged . Given he has someone at home too .
Honestly they were making her bed for the next patient as we were exiting through the door . She moved to four different units in four days .
Just wanted to reassure you as it was a surprise to me initially but family members were able to explain it each step of the way and that helped me a lot .
take care and I hope you get some good news soon as it’s very stressful seeing them like that .

Hi court. Just had a phone call off Les to say he is getting discharged with antibiotics etc. I am just waiting for a phone call as my very good friend went this morning to keep him company. I must admit I am surprised but the doctor has discharged him. I will find out more when I go. I now know again what to look out for and he will take notice of me. Yes you are right about the different wards as he explained that to me as the needed the EAU bed as there were 10 being admitted. Thank you for your reassurance x
It’s great news but I know what you mean about looking out for the signs now . It’s not easy for sure and I feel I left this one too late and should have acted quicker . Hindsight and all that . But I was scared to give her too many antibiotics. Mum has a supply at home I am suppose to action to prevent hospital admission but it was so subtle this time .
You will be exhausted yourself but lovely to get him home in better shape .
Take special care ,
Court

Glad he is coming home I had same last year with Simon had infection somewhere he then caught Covid in hospital told me sorry can't come home till they find where the infection is next call said I'm allowed home. Home is safer for him he has antibiotic so better for both of you xx
I just feel so exhausted and feel like crying but have to go back to the hospital to pick up his antibiotics and it will be dark. My friend has stayed so she can come with me there and back and will get a taxi home. I am worried about him being home now and tummy is in knots. I could sit and cry. He starts chemo on the 29 and has a scan on the afternoon so really not sure what is going on or what will happen. Is it normal to feel so down and upset xx
Truth be told I can't remember the last time I was happy you are going to feel scared and depressed it does not help that it is Christmas and everything is focused on happy families and celebrations. My tummy is in knots have my boys coming to Stay Sunday really stressed about it first time in a year too much for me and I know it will be too much for Simon but they all just want to be here I managed to put them off until Sunday as they have had colds but gosh I am nervous. Once les is home and settled you will go on auto pilot I know I did sending hugs xx
I feel the same, Sally and I had a good Cry this morning and have felt teary all day. What with Xmas and now people ringing ti organise deliveries of medical stuff for Paul next week and nurses coming twice a day I could run away. Supposed to have a night out tonight but just don’t feel like it. How I wish things were different.
