Hi everyone

I'm Steph from the Community team Slight smile

Here is a new thread for carers, family and friends. This is a space for you to chat, share experiences and support each other through issues related to your loved ones bowel cancer.  The previous thread will shortly be locked as it was getting rather long which can make it difficult to navigate.

Please remember that we also have other dedicated spaces on the Community for carers, family and friends. These spaces exist so you can support each other away from members of the forum who might be dealing with their own cancer diagnosis:

Family and friends forum

Carers only forum

Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum

You would be welcome to set up another new thread like this in one of the above forums. Please just let us know if you would like any help?

We hope you will continue to find lots of support from each other and the Community. We're here to help, so please do let us know if you have any questions or support needs by emailing us at community@macmillan.org.uk

  • My dad wasn’t in for too long in the end. He went in for his op on Weds 26 July, then I took him home on Mon 31. Because the op took so long, they decided to keep him in the recovery bays for the first night, rather than putting him on the high dependency ward. That worked out quite well, as he received much closer care that first night, and then they ended up moving him straight to the ordinary ward the following day. We pushed to get him home as soon as possible as we thought the main thing he needed to aid his recovery was sleep, and he just wasn’t getting that in the ward.

Dad saw Mr Hammond early on when he was diagnosed, but it was another doctor who did his op. I can’t remember his name, but will check. I’ll also ask him how long the wait was. My recollection is that they took him off chemo so we had a vague idea that it would be in 5 or 6 weeks’ time, but then only got to know the precise date about a week or so beforehand. Will confirm with my folks x x

  • Hi all, thanks for your kind words and support. I'm so grateful for you all, its nice to have a space to let out how we feel.

My dad is still in hospital, getting his potassium levels treated. He's not eating or drinking, just sleeping, in a bad mood, slurred speech, a bit confused. He's still on oxygen. The weekend doctors couldn't tell me too much. I'm hoping to find out more when I go to the hospital this afternoon. His stomach is as hard as a rock, the turmours have took over. All I can do is take it a day at a time.

PattyK - I know what you mean, it's like I'm in denial, hoping my dad will miraculously get better but there's no way he can recover from this. Thank you for still coming on here to support us. Knowing that you've been through this process makes it less daunting. You are so brave and inspiring!

Tory - You are so brave as well, you've been through this with your husband and now your son as well. Hang in there! I'm glad you took a break and watched some ballet. Hope you're getting enough rest. Hope they can sort out Paul's pain, it must be excruciating to see him suffer.

Jkee/Distraught - Good luck with everything. It really is an emotional rollercoaster. Hope your husbands aren't in too much pain. It's nice you got got the house for a walk Jkee, hope your puppy isn't causing you too much trouble.

Matt - it's great you're spending quality with your dad and making happy memories. Looking back. I've done the best that I can for my dad after his cancer diagnosis. ow, driving classic cars around the Peak District sounds so fun. Looking back. I've done the best that I can for my dad after his cancer diagnosis and it sounds like you're doing the same. Gosh, your dad's operation was so long. I'm glad it all went well. Distraught, I'm sure your husband's operation will go smoothly, I could imagine it'll be worrying for you.

Look after yourselves everyone. Thanks again for your virtual support. Thinking of you all x

  • Thanks Matt. Les will be ringing the end of this week to see if anyone has heard anything. We would rather know early as he can keep his fitness up ready for the op. I am actually dreading this.  At the moment he is having problems with his bowels. This is also making me very uptight xx

  • Hi falling leaves. I am so sad to hear your dad is still in hospital but hopefully they will get his potassium levels sorted and he can get home.  Thinking of you.

    hugs to all xx
