Hi, I don’t know where to start really, my mum who is 85 was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer 4 weeks ago, it has spread to her liver and lungs. Due to her age they won’t offer any treatment which now I understand but to start with I was angry. My dad has just had a knee operation and is only just mobile, I live 100 miles away and feel very guilty for not being there every day. After her initial consultation she has no follow up appointments or home visits scheduled. My dad asked the question ‘how long’ and was told days, maybe weeks and seems to be taking it better than I am. She has no pain relief and is in obvious pain but refuses to contact the doctor for help. I call every night and am visiting as much as I can, once or twice a week, I feel very useless and being an only child have no siblings to share whats happening. Only my son knows that his Nan is dying because my twin girls are in the middle of their first year university exams and I hate keeping it from them. I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that she stays well for 2 more weeks then I can tell them and hope they understand why they were the last to know. Work have been fabulous giving me time off to travel up for visits but now I’ve got a kidney infection so I feel guilty for not being in work. The stress of juggling everything is driving me mad.
Welcome Beccy . I completely understand where you are coming from and please do come here to share and get some support . It’s the juggling that’s so hard on top of the heartache .
Your mum clearly is well loved and sometimes we do have to protect the grandchildren from the full reality of the situation when it’s a critical time in their own learning .
You are under a lot of pressure so I am glad you have come here .
Our helpline staff are also around 0808 8080000 if you would like to talk it through with them .
Take care ,

Thank you, it so very hard to be strong goodness knows how my mum is feeling. She is always smiling and sounds so positive. My son is driving me up to see her tomorrow, he finished university on Monday and is very keen to go and see her. He has just finished a biochemistry degree and understands far too much about what is happening inside her body having studied cancer and Parkinson’s disease for the past 4 years. He doesn’t show a lot of emotion and I’m worried what will happen when we get there.
That’s so good he wants to go . What a boost that will be for her .
I hope he handles it ok . All my dad’s grandkids that went in were outstanding and really helped out but after he passed one struggled with it more then . I just made sure I was available to help him . It passed but I am still pleased he went in .
Hope your keeping ok yourself .

My mum passed away yesterday, the weeks they said in May turned out to be months so I’m pleased about that. My only regret is that she died in hospital and not at home where she wanted so desperately to be but she deteriorated so fast that there wasn’t time.
Good luck and best wishes to all.
So sorry for your loss . Goodbyes are so hard but it is so good you got that extra time with her . That’s priceless .
My dad died in hospital too . I wish it were different but I do think some aspects are out of our control and with time that aspect has settled .
I hope that you are peaceful in the full knowledge you surrounded her with your love and that’s all we ever can do .
Take special care of yourself .

So pleased you could do that .
It is the first time I have experienced grief so no expert thankfully but I just do what my dad always said . One day at a time .
Thinking of you as you navigate this next part and always here if you need a connection with someone else who misses a parent .
